Miami Protests School administrators stress student safety

An infamous church known for picketing the funerals of fallen servicemen, voiced its message at local schools last week.

The controversial Kansas-based Westboro Baptist Church (WBC) appeared locally to protest at Oak Hills High School, the Ohio State University and Miami University Tuesday, Oct. 25.

'Red State' offers a new kind of fright

Finally, an original horror film — just in time for Halloween. It would be easy to say that this story was extremely exaggerated, but unfortunately, I wouldn’t be surprised if something like it happened in this current climate. Not surprisingly, director Kevin Smith took a controversial distribution approach to this controversial story.

Letter, 10/31: Jesus and funeral protests

As I read about the latest court battle involving the Westboro Baptist church, it finally put me over the top when Margie Phelps-Roper commented about how attorneys general "spent thousands of dollars" (" Court voids ban on funeral pickets ," Oct. 21) fighting her church's picketing of soldiers' funerals.

NBA Lockout: LeBron James and the kingdom ruled by knights | ProBasketballTalk

In 1964, the players for the NBA All-Star Game refused to leave the locker room at the famed Boston Gardens. The game was going to be televised, a huge step forward for the league, and the players knew this was their best chance at getting the owners by their tender parts. They refused to walk onto the floor unless the league recognized their union and promised a pension plan, paving the way for the players to finally start having some say in how the league they drove was run.

The beauty queen and the mormon

Joyce McKinney was a small-town beauty queen who became famous after a young Mormon missionary claimed she had kidnapped him, chained him to a bed and raped him. The bizarre tale gripped Britain in the Seventies and is now retold in a fine documentary. Andrew Anthony recalls it

Joyce McKinney is one of those names that for people of a certain age opens a doorway into the past. To mention it is to be transported back to the Seventies, when TV was limited, food was awful and sex was naughty. Back then, computers were the preserve of boffins in white coats, but even if journalists had managed to lay their hands on some mainframe monster the size of a small house, and programmed it with all the ingredients of the perfect tabloid story, the results could never have matched the bizarre and compelling tale of a wannabe beauty queen 's obsessional love.

Ride of joy turns into struggle, sorrow for family

FORT WAYNE – Climb on a motorcycle and head west down Cook Road and it seems the whole world lies in front of you.

The gray pavement across flat fields of beans draws you farther west toward more empty roads just waiting for you to open the bike up a little, to let the Honda’s V-45 Magna engine sing as you watch fences begin and end, fields roll and houses come and go, houses like the one you left a few minutes ago where your wife and two sons are waiting for you.

It may seem strange to hear that the NBA labor deal is 95% done, with the NBA lockout now 121 days old and commissioner David Stern cancelling an additional two weeks of games on Friday.  Yet that’s exactly what Howard Beck of the New York Times asserts .

The N.B.A. and the players union have agreed on contract lengths and luxury-tax rates, trade rules and cap exceptions, and a host of oddly named provisions offering “amnesty” and “stretch payments” and less onerous “base-year” rules.

Celebrity Birthdays, October 28

Happy birthday to Joaquin Phoenix, Julia Roberts and Bruce Jenner!

The younger brother of the late River Phoenix is better known as Joaquin, but when he was 4 years old, he decided he wanted a more earthy name like his siblings and denominated himself Leaf , after raking leaves in the backyard with his dad. Aside from acting in hit films like Gladiator , Signs and Walk the Line , he is also a huge animal rights advocate. Phoenix is a strict vegan, PETA spokesperson, and once refused to wear shoes during a Prada photo shoot because they were made out of leather. And while filming Gladiator , Quills and Walk the Line , he requested the costume designers make his outfits from synthetic materials. In 2006, Phoenix won a Best Actor Golden Globe for Walk the Line . He definitely could relate to Johnny Cash and his drug and alcohol problems. In 2005, the actor checked into rehab for alcoholism. Although he announced in 2008 that he was quitting acting, it looks like Phoenix is going to take back his words. According to IMDb , he'll star in 2013's The Master .

Lindsay Lohan To Bare All Her Goodies For Playboy | DrJays.com Live | Fashion. Music. Lifestyle

Well isn’t this a shocking bit of news?

Lindsay Lohan and all of her legal and personal woes were bound to have her showing her freckled funbags to some magazine sooner or later. It’s not like we haven’t seen them before but now we’ll get to see if the carpet matches the drapes in Playboy. Reports have surfaced that the magazine will cough up a cool $1 million for Lohan to take it all off for the magazine. Now, while this isn’t shocking, it makes you wonder how much more of a downward spiral Lohan‘s career will delve in before she smashes into the pavement. It’s apparent that Lohan‘s life span seems to get cut shorter and shorter each day as another legal, family or drug and alcohol problem surfaces. Posing for Playboy in the midst of career turmoil is a sign that the end is near and we’ll likely see her on Dr. Drew’s Celebrity Rehab shedding tears over not being able to gulp down vodka and pills. Dumping Satan: It’s Time to Let Go

The history of Christianity, as atheists are fond of reminding us, is one that has been drenched in blood. Whether religious war, inquisition, or colonial violence, there’s been great evil committed in the name of God. What role has the idea of Satan played in the development of this culture? Theologian Miguel De La Torre, with co-author Albert Hernàndez, has just published a book, The Quest For the Historical Satan,  that takes this question by the tail.

Ten Deep 10.27.11: Top Ten Scream Kings

From Ash in The Evil Dead and Dewey and Randy from Scream to Fright Night's Charley Brewster, Tommy Jarvis from Friday the 13th and more, 411's Mike Gorman counts down the top 10 scream kings of all-time!

This group includes some of the more famous like Jamie Lee Curtis whose Laurie Strode has long battled her brother Michael Myers in the Halloween films. This Halloween I thought it might be more interesting to see if a gender switch is possible when it comes to these characters. Do Scream Kings exist? I think so and this week I bring you ten (well technically twelve) male characters who I think qualify.

10 Things That Matter in Your Career

Whether you’re just beginning your career or are in the middle of a career transition, taking the time to think about what really matters to you in life can save you years, even decades, of heartache. Here are some things to consider.

1. Money isn’t everything . Family often encourages you to go for the career where you can make the highest income. Unless you have a passion for the job that makes the highest income, going there is going to be a source of incredible misery for you. While paying the bills is important, happiness and satisfaction are even more important.

How Do I Fix My Bricked Android Phone?

Dear Lifehacker,

Rooting my Android phone went well, but I've tried to flash a custom ROM and now I think I've bricked my phone. Is there anything I can do?

Image remixed from an original by Fe Ilya .

First of all, lets get something straight. Most people use the term "bricked" improperly. A bricked phone means one thing: your phone won't turn on in any way, shape or form, and there's nothing you can do to fix it. It is, for all intents and purposes, as useful as a brick. A phone stuck in a boot loop is not bricked, nor is a phone that boots straight into recovery mode. These are things you can usually fix, and they're a lot more common than a truly bricked phone. If your phone is actually bricked, you won't be able to fix it yourself (but there are things you can do—see the end of this article). For those other problems, you have a few options.

2 Broke Girls—The Anti-Occupy Wall Street TV Show? - Campus Progress

The plot of CBS’s new sitcom 2 Broke Girls sounds like some other shows—two waitress roommates trying to save enough money to open a cupcake shop and make it big— but it’s a far cry from the kinds of shows that used to target 20-somethings.

The show is written and produced by Whitney Cummings, a comedian whose jokes mostly follow a general outline: Women are crazy and men are broke losers.

Critics claim '2 Broke Girls' uses racial stereotypes

New CBS comedy series “2 Broke Girls” is attracting criticism for their portrayal of a Korean character and their alleged use of racial stereotypes.

The character of Korean immigrant Bryce (Han) Lee, as played by Matthew Moy, runs the diner where the “2 Broke Girls” (played by Kat Dennings and Beth Behrs) are employed. As we mentioned in our recap back in September , the only drawback to the series premiere was that Moy's character certainly "walked the line of turning into a stereotype."

From the Creaux's Nest

My birds are still AWOL. I haven’t taken the time to call the Extension office to find out why. Other folks report their birds are also in exile. I have one old Hummingbird that stayed behind, too long a trip to South America for the old guy is what I suspect. Also missing in action for most of the last month is Roy. He’s due back this week then Mark leaves, when he returns Nicole goes on vacation. Our 38-year employee, Debbie, now retired, will come in and pitch-hit. Mosquitoes are swarming but hold on just a few more days. Despite aggressive spraying, both by land and by air, the south winds bring in a new batch as soon as the old bunch is killed. It’s hard to get ahead of them. We should see some relief by the weekend. Temperatures should drop down in the 40’s allowing the spraying to catch up to them. The good thing is that floodwater mosquitoes don’t carry diseases, such as West Nile, etc.*****Because of this drought, with rainfall expected to be 40 percent less this winter, our roads face greater damage. As the soil shifts, so does pavement. Cities and states will face major road repairs. Also 40 percent to 50 percent of our trees are expected to die. That breaks my heart but it also will be expensive to remove dead wood. Look for more concrete slabs to crack due to the drought, which is not too unusual in this area. We just thought it was bad two months ago when we even had Neighbor Cox doing his rain dance. It has gotten far worse since. Some rainfall is expected Thursday which might help surface plants but not much else. *****Gotta move on. Please come along, I promise it won’t do you no harm.

Week 8 RB Rankings: DeMarco Murray A Legit RB1?

Cowboys RB DeMarco Murray takes a 91-yard carry to the end zone against the St. Louis Rams in Week 7.

Considering he was facing such a crap defense like the Rams, I had figured DeMarco Murray would make the most of his chance as the lead back in the Cowboys’ offense. Little did I know that he would go on to lead the league in rushing yards with 253. That stat was good enough, but him chipping in a 91 yard scamper for a touchdown was icing on the cake. Many will tell you that Murray looked good simply because the Rams are that bad. But going up against an Eagles Defense that gives up an average of 123.8 rushing yards a game along with a 4.8 yards a carry average to opposing running backs, it’s easy for me to consider Murray a low-end RB1 for Week 8. In my opinion, Murray isn’t a one-week wonder.

The First Fifteen: Week Eight

This week's First Fifteen takes a look at the biggest games with four major NFC contenders on bye:

1. Tim Tebow takes a backseat for a minute to the Lions, who have reached a flashpoint in their season. With two straight losses, the darling Lions must respond and find some solutions to a growing problem. The past two weeks against the 49ers and Falcons, despite the postgame blowups with coaches' handshakes and talk of dirty play, they have been smacked around a little and outmuscled at the point of attack. On top of that, the Lions have gotten out of rhythm offensively with QB Matthew Stafford looking off his game, and head coach Jim Schwartz chalks that up — using a basketball analogy — to those teams slowing the tempo down. "Maybe you are a team that likes to fast-break and you got (an opponent) that is slowing the ball down going down the court or knocking it down after a made basket so you can't fast break or the other way around," Schwartz said. "You haven't played your game, you played the opponents' game. I think, in particular the last two weeks, that has been the case with us offensively, defensively, special teams-wise is we have played on our opponents' terms rather than our own terms." Well, guess what, Jim: No one slows it down like the Broncos ... or do they? Keep reading.

Week 8 NFL Power Rankings: Colts, Dolphins All in on Andrew Luck | Bleacher Report

Last season, the most prized draft pick heading into the 2011 NFL Draft was Stanford quarterback Andrew Luck. After an outstanding 2010 season in which he led the Cardinals to an Orange Bowl title, Luck was guaranteed to be the No. 1 pick. The only problem with that, though, was that he stayed in school, determined to win a national championship.

NFL Week 8 Top Fantasy Players: Running Backs (RB)

1.  Adrian Peterson (MIN) -- The league’s best running back against the league’s worst (statistically) defense vs. fantasy running backs.  You do the math.  Christian Ponder showed enough last week to keep Carolina from having 8 or 9 in the box on every play.

2.  Ray Rice (BAL) -- Even the Baltimore defense is speaking out against the play selection of the Ravens offense in their embarrassing loss on MNF.  Look for Baltimore to get back to what they do best -- use Ray Rice liberally.

Sinking to new depths, he brings on Bush "brawn" Joe Allbaugh, who backed Giuliani in '08. Is Perry the next Rudy?

Topics: Rick Perry , Mitt Romney , 2012 Elections

Rick Perry’s craven embrace of birtherism in Parade Magazine shouldn’t surprise anyone. Much like Mitt Romney, he’ll say whatever he thinks he needs to in order to win election. But he’s not as smart as Romney, and he’s got no chance in a general election unless he climbs from his new depths in the Republican primary pack. So the man who’s been known to flatter secessionists made a play for the birther vote this weekend, along with the support of the movement’s leader, Donald Trump.

Budweiser to continue as World Cup sponsor

BRUSSELS (AP) — Budweiser extended its sponsorship of the World Cup through the 2018 edition in Russia and the 2022 event in Qatar on Tuesday, confident that fans would look beyond FIFA's corruption scandal and focus on the tournaments only.

Anheuser-Busch InBev's chief marketing officer Chris Burggraeve said the global impact of the World Cup remained "phenomenal" for the world's biggest brewer and expected Budweiser to continue to enjoy the same kind of success the 2010 tournament in South Africa had created.

USD67bn of GCC projects revived in 2011

Despite the 'double dip recession' scenarios being played out in the international markets, more than USD 67 billion worth of projects have been revived in the GCC in 2011, according to a Sharjah-based project tracker firm.

"These figures are totaled on the estimated project values. In the GCC, projects with a combined value of USD 29 billion are already under construction with Dubai alone accounting for over 30% of the revived projects," said Ben D'Souza, Chief Operating Officer at BNC Networks, an independent project tracker research firm , which compiled the data exclusively for Zawya.

At its Oct. 24, 2011 meeting, the Ann Arbor city council considered but rejected a proposal to reappoint a historic district study committee for an area along Fourth and Fifth avenues near downtown Ann Arbor. Skeptics Catching Up on Climate Science : Discovery News

There really wasn't any doubt.

Evidence that Earth is warming is based on three sets of temperature readings. One set is maintained by NASA, one by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), and one by a collaborative effort between Britain's Meteorological Office and the University of East Anglia's Climate Research Unit, a dataset generally referred to as HadCRU. All of them have painted essentially the same picture: a global temperature increase over land of slightly under 1 degree C (1.8 F) over the past century.

OpenStack Open Source Cloud Standard: Reality Check

I’ve been watching OpenStack , the emerging open source cloud standard, for more than a year now.  Without a doubt, open source cloud projects generate buzz on TalkinCloud. But where exactly do VARs and MSPs fit into the OpenStack conversastion?

Since the OpenStack project’s mid-2010 launch, the community of open source developers and solution providers building on the platform has grown from just  two — Rackspace and NASA — up to more than 110 today. And technology titans like Dell , Citrix , and HP have all signed on, with even traditionally hardware-focused Intel submitting code to the OpenStack community.

Ambulance fee cut a waste: Labor

THE $242 million the Baillieu government is spending to slash ambulance fees will not save lives and would be better spent on paramedics, according to the Labor opposition.

The comments by Opposition Leader Daniel Andrews come after Ambulance Victoria had a backlog of 47 jobs on Sunday night.

The ambulance union said the shortage forced paramedics to leave patients in hospital waiting rooms and then head off to other emergencies.

Hulk Hogan

. If you’ll remember, Hogan recently ripped off a Tebow jersey while yelling things on SportsNation , and Gumbel didn’t take kindly to it:

Such venom – even though it seemed to us the Hulkster’s whole Tebow rant was in jest anyway. Hosts Colin Cowherd and Michelle Beadle requested he say something to fire up the quarterback, after all. And hey, maybe it worked – the Broncos did beat the Dolphins today, with Tebow rallying the squad after a (very) slow start. We know, too, that Tebow is very much aware of those who downplay his talents.

‘Greenway’ for 26th SW in Delridge? Letter follows ride

October 23, 2011 at 8:42 pm | In Delridge , West Seattle news | 2 Comments

What started as a discussion on the North Delridge e-mail list quickly turned into something bigger – a bike ride with a visiting City Councilmember, to explore the possibility of a big change for 26th SW, a future as a “greenway” – a street-use concept the city is exploring (as detailed in this recent story from the Seattle Times [WSB partner]). Jake Vanderplas , who first brought the idea forward, CC’d us on a followup letter he sent to the entire City Council, recapping the ride and the concept. We asked for his permission to republish it here – so more people hear about the idea in the early stages:

Two-handed bowler makes local history - GreenwichTime

It's nice to know people read this column. My good friend Ned Finney sent me the following story, which I am glad to bring to you:

"Hi Frank. After reading your Sept. 26 article, it occurred to me that a record had indeed been broken in this association. To my knowledge there has never been a two-handed release bowler that has shot a perfect game. That ended when Cody Johnson did it on the last week of Brookfield's Adult Junior League on Aug. 8 with games of 300, 225, 208 for a 733 series. So, unless there is another two-handed bowler in this association that did it already, Cody would be the first. To top that accomplishment, Cody is only 16 years old. What a bowling career he will have with a start like that. But Cody comes from a great bowling family. His brother Zach is just an awesome bowler with numerous high games and series. Unfortunately, he has been so busy with other things that he is unable to commit to a league. That leaves us with Aaron, the boys' father, who I think is a shoo-in for the Hall Of Fame with five 300 games, six 11 in a row, a 299, an 814 series and an almost record-breaking 855 series. What impresses me about the Johnsons is their uncanny ability to adjust to lane conditions rather than give up and blame poor scores on the lanes. Speaking of smart adjusting, one of the best at it, Gary Grant, shot another 300 on Oct. 4 to add to a long list of accomplishments. It's hard to believe that he is not on the list of Hall of Famers."

The Tim Tebow Era Begins As Denver Visits Miami

It’s not enough Tim Tebow was named starting quarterback after last game but he also has to go to Miami and show up for a Florida Gator celebration.

Tim Tebow has helped a possible sellout crowd in Miami.  Not only are the Bronco faithful elated, but he’s getting a hero’s welcome from his home state.  If that isn’t a recipe for disaster I’m not sure what is.  All eyes will be on this young man to replicate his heroics at Florida while giving the Bronco faithful new hope.  There is probably as much pressure on Tebow this Sunday as he’s ever experienced in his career.

Why would Florida Atlantic want to improve on this offense?

Howard Schnellenberger was asked about the Middle Tennessee spread offense that dominated his defense in Saturday’s 38-14 loss.

“They got us going, the speed of their offense and we knew it, that’s what they’ve beaten us with the last three years and it beats a lot of people,” he said.

Here is where his answer took a bizarre twist.

Joe B. Blog: Sevens are wild

I am typing this postgame report from the press room on the event level at Verizon Center.  It’s a quiet place of work which is situated not far from two very noisy places. One of those is the old Coaches Club bar from which I can hear many ecstatic Caps fans clinking glasses in celebration of a great win.  The other noisy spot is inside the Caps dressing room, where the players who made the convincing win over Detroit happen have a right to be loud.

In the end, it is a football game, and fans of the Bucs and the Bears and of the NFL are watching the game. Obviously, we are going to recognize that the game is in London and that it is special. But it's still a football game. That is our priority.

Statistics show that technology has not reduced the number of foreign workers recruited for selected jobs in Qatar according to the “Qatar Population Status 2011, two years after the launch of the population policy”, a report issued by the Permanent Population Committee (PPC). Among those jobs are civil engineers, technicians, cleaning workers and accountants. Qatar is experiencing comprehensive development and an economic boom which involved the recruitment of 1,271,000 foreign workers, which amounts to 94.2% of the total economically active population in 2010, the report says. Female labour force (LF) amounts to 12.3% of the overall LF. Semi- skilled and unskilled workers are around 75% of the total foreign workers. 11% of the total non-Qatari LF are domestic workers. 86.3% of Qataris work in the public sector. The report also says that around two thirds of Qatar population of 15 years and above are single. Doha has the highest population density in the country with 47% of inhabitants living there. The density is 3,394 persons per sq km, while Al Shamal has the lowest rate at 1% - less than nine persons per sq km. In education, the number of students increased as well as opportunities for males and females within the Qatari education system. The number of students enrolled in public, independent and private schools rose from 65,675 males and 65,381 females in 2004 to 92,117 males and 88,225 females in 2010. Spending on public health care amounted to 7.2% of the total budget of 2010-2011. Consequently, life expectancy increased to 78.2 years in 2010 and infant mortality rate declined to 6.7 per thousand in the same year. Women’s economic activity improved significantly, around 36.6% of the total labour force in 2010 was Qatari women, which is a large figure compared with most Arab countries. Due to the requirements of the economic boom and World Cup 2020, Qatar faces demographical challenges that necessitate PPC to maintain a sophisticated balanced scheme to simultaneously cater for development projects and preserve the Qatari identity and culture in the society. Also, PPC tends to limit dependency on foreign labour force by encouraging Qataris to marry and urging them to reproduce. In this respect, efforts are going on to raise awareness and reduce the adverse effects of some social practices such as dowries, and wedding expenses. There is also a trend to develop urban centres far from Doha by providing job opportunities and opening new facilities there.

The decision to award the 2022 World Cup to Qatar has been called into question by new FIFA executive committee member Theo Zwanziger, with the German saying some of his fellow members had been pressurised by their governments to vote for the bid.

The comments from the 66-year-old president of the German Football Association to the Frankfurter Allgemeine newspaper are significant as he was appointed last week by FIFA to head one of the new committees established to clean up the organisation.

Suits Who Work Around Occupy Wall Street Tell Us What They Really Think

The crowds of demonstrators and tourists flocking to Zuccotti Park have certainly irritated some of the local residents , but what about the businessmen who around there? During lunch hour on a sunny afternoon last week, we went down to the financial district to talk to men and women who work in various corporate fields around Wall Street. And while many seem to shrug off Occupy Wall Street with a mere eye roll, others had something more articulate to say. A number of those interviewed asked to keep their identity and place of work hidden, perhaps fearful of backlash—but here's what the suits told us:

Bank customers jumping ship over new account fees

When Heather Kellar learned that Wells Fargo was going to start charging her a $3 monthly fee to use her debit card, she closed her account and found another bank.

Heather Kellar, of North Augusta, switched to First Citizens Banks from Wells Fargo because she didn't want to pay the bank's new debit card fee. The new fee would have cost her $3 a month.

Central bankers need to update their outdated analytical toolkit - Fullermoney

Central bankers need to update their outdated analytical toolkit - My thanks to a reader for this interesting article ( may require subscription registration ) by Gillian Tett for the Financial Times. Here is the opening:

Eight years ago, Claudio Borio, a senior economist at the Bank for International Settlements, co-authored a paper which warned that the world's financial system was spinning out of control, due to excess in the complex credit world. At the time, the paper was largely ignored, if not derided by many senior policymakers. But now it looks prescient; so much so, in fact, that Borio and his co-author, Bill White (who also used to work at the BIS), are some of the few economists who have emerged from the recent financial crisis with their reputations intact.

Mark Carney on a mission: First Canada, now the world

JEREMY TOROBIN, KEVIN CARMICHAEL - The Globe and Mail

In international finance, reputations are made on the big call. Get a bold prediction right and you might become a legend. Blow it, as Alan Greenspan did, and you’ll be a goat.

Mark Carney began making his reputation as economic policy maker quickly – on March 4, 2008, to be exact, only a month after taking over as the Bank of Canada’s eighth Governor. Faced with the first tremors of a recession in the United States, he did something unexpected, slashing the bank’s key interest rate by half a percentage point. Six weeks later, he cut deeply again.

End of the spend is nigh

We are on the eve of destruction. The signs and symptoms are everywhere. In the US, the top 1 per cent is getting richer and the other 99 per cent are mostly getting poorer. The first GFC barely took the glint off the bumper bars of bankers' limousines. They continue to gobble everything up and disgorge it on the bottom percenters. Most commented Articles

MASS. MARKET: Former state bank commissioner gets key DC role - Taunton, MA - The Taunton Gazette

With all the divisiveness in Washington these days, it might seem unusual for President Barack Obama’s nominations to coast through the Senate.

But Thomas Curry is one of those people whose nominations should be as close to a slam dunk as possible.

Curry, a former Massachusetts banking commissioner, hasn’t necessarily been whisked through the Senate. Obama in July nominated Curry to run the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency, the unwieldy-sounding agency that oversees national banks. The Senate’s banking committee approved the appointment last month. A Republican on that panel who had raised concerns about Curry told Reuters earlier this month that he wouldn’t oppose Curry’s nomination, and he knew of no other opponents in the Senate.
