The statistics and awards from that single year are all that are taken into account.  Although it is an individual award a lot of the team's success is factored into the rankings.  The rankings reflect how each player performed when it was crucial and if the player had the "Heisman moment" or just the "it" factor.

Mountain West Conference proposes 16-team college football playoff

The Mountain West Conference, seeking a bigger piece of post-season college football revenue, is proposing to dismantle the controversial Bowl Championship Series and create a 16-team playoff to determine a national champion.

Mountain West Commissioner Craig Thompson, in an interview with The Arizona Republic, estimated a playoff would generate $700 million annually for college football, more than three times the nearly $182 million the BCS generated last year.

Boise State (No. 5 AP/No. 6 coaches) is probably still two or three losses away from a chance to play for a national title if the Broncos run the table in the regular season -- the holy grail for a team from a non-BCS automatic qualifier conference.

2011 Florida State Football Predictions

In the first year under Jimbo Fisher, the Florida State Seminoles finished with an overall record of 10-4. It was the first time the Seminoles reached double-digit wins since they went 10-3 in 2003.
