After a very slow start, Oregon rallies to edge Washington State in five sets

Down two sets to none against Washington State on Friday, the 18th-ranked Oregon volleyball team knew what was coming as it retreated to the locker room for a 10-minute intermission before the third set.

“We got chewed out,” said UO sophomore setter Lauren Plum.

And for good reason.

Before a crowd of 1,135 at Matthew Knight Arena, the lifeless Ducks came out with no energy against the Cougars, dropping the first two sets, 21-25 and 17-25, before roaring back to life.

Protesters won't dare picket Obama | Noemie Emery | Columnists | Washington Examiner

Lefties are aglow as protests spread like a rash through Manhattan and other big cities, sure this is just what their side needs.

The offensive protesters took them off the defensive. This is their first jolt of speed since Grant Park and Barack Obama. After many false starts, this is their Tea Party. If they can turn mobs out, what can't they do next?

New Hampshire and Manchester news, weather, business and sports - New Hampshire's newspaper

TUESDAY, OCT. 4, UPDATE: GOOD FOR ROMNEY, HUNTSMAN. New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie's announcement today that he will not run for President was viewed as a boost for former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney and former Utah Gov. Jon Huntsman.

That's especially true in New Hampshire, where polls have consistently had Romney as the front-runner, even though polls also indicate that voters have yet to make firm decisions on who they will support in the first-in-the-nation primary.

Dissecting Obama’s job plan

Whether officials call the newest economic Band-Aid a “jobs bill,” a “growth plan” or “stimulus,” Chattanooga-area businessmen say they’ve grown weary of new government programs and doubt that this one will have much effect on job growth.

“It’s all just a temporary measure, so if anything it’s going to give temporary results,” said James Richards, who co-owns several Five Guys Burgers and Fries restaurants in the area.

Wisconsin bishops: abortion now definitely part of Obamacare thanks to ‘contraception’ mandate

MADISON, WI, September 7, 2011 ( LifeSiteNews.com ) – The leaders of Wisconsin’s five Roman Catholic dioceses have written the Obama administration saying that they “strongly oppose” the federal preventive services mandate that will require insurance companies to cover contraception, including “emergency contraception” such as Ella that can cause abortions.

After rejecting plenty, Scott admin accepts some ObamaCare dollars

A legislative panel gave Gov. Rick Scott’s administration approval Wednesday for a $3.4 million grant drawn from the federal Affordable Care Act, the measure backed by President Obama which Florida’s Republican chief executive ridicules regularly.

The Legislative Budget Commission agreed to take the cash to provide home visiting services to at-risk families. But Sens. Joe Negron , R-Stuart, and Don Gaetz , R-Niceville, urged lawmakers to reject the funding, warning that the program’s services were murky and that if federal dollars dry up, the state could be left covering the cost.

Flowers for Obamacare

In Daniel Keyes' novel, Flowers for Algernon , a medical experiment nearly triples the IQ of the protagonist, Charlie Gordon. Apparently, the President's experiment with our health care system has produced a similar effect on Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas. For two decades, progressives have claimed that he is intellectually unfit to sit on the Court. They have repeatedly told us that Thomas is, as one commentator recently phrased it , "a dunce and a worm." However, as myriad constitutional challenges to Obamacare work their way through the courts toward an inevitable showdown before the Supreme Court, the dunce's intellectual powers have somehow improved. In fact, we are now advised that Thomas is not merely intelligent, but that he is an evil genius with an outsized influence on the rest of the Court.

It's Going To Hurt

Medical Spending: Yet another study finds that ObamaCare is going to increase costs. And this one wasn't issued by an opponent of the Democrats' reforms. In fact, one of its authors is an ObamaCare apologist.

In an effort to determine how ObamaCare would affect Wisconsin, the state's Health Services Department commissioned Gorman Actuarial and economist Jonathan Gruber from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology to assess the program.

Oops! No ObamaCare Tax Credit Via Federal Exchanges?

A Curious Answer | The Weekly Standard

It’s true that Romney didn’t cut Medicare.  (Nor, as a governor, could he.)  Romney’s health-care law, however, applies to all Massachusetts residents, not just 8 percent of them — even if only 8 percent were originally out of compliance with it.  Like ObamaCare, Romney’s health-care law requires 100 percent of residents, with perhaps very few exceptions, to buy (often heavily taxpayer-subsidized) government-approved health insurance.  True, the vast majority of Massachusetts residents already had insurance when the law was passed, but that’s the case nationally as well.

Chris Winters: No more Medicare patients as a result of Obamacare

To the editor:

Remember the words from Nancy Pelosi regarding the Obamacare bill? “We have to pass it in order to see what’s in it.”

Obama also had some sobering words about the new bill, stating that the government has to make some tough decisions when it comes to seniors and some of the care they are receiving. The genie is coming out of the bottle and it looks as if a lot of people are going to be in trouble, seniors and people with private insurance companies alike.

LETTER: Obamacare ground job creation to a halt

A report and a graph from the Heritage Foundation dramatize conclusively that the passage of the Obamacare Bill in March of 2010 virtually ground private job creation to a halt within a month. Prior to the April 2010, job creation averaged about 67,000 jobs per month, according to the Heritage report using figures from the Bureau of Labor Statistics. After 2010, job creation averaged a paltry 6,700 per month, and has not improved since. The passage of Obamacare reduced private job creation by 90 percent.

Fanatics advance ideology

I watched in disbelief as our nation elected Barack Obama president. I awoke the next morning realizing that radicals would control both houses of Congress and the presidency.

I watched in disbelief as our nation elected Barack Obama president. I awoke the next morning realizing that radicals would control both houses of Congress and the presidency. To make matters worse, it soon became obvious that Al Franken would steal Norm Coleman’s Senate seat. This would give the Senate a 60-seat majority – making it impossible for Republicans to even filibuster legislation.

The Ames Republican debate transcript: Everything they said that you missed

In anticipation of today's Ames straw poll in Iowa, Fox News Channel and the Washington Examiner co-sponsored the first Republican candidate debate in the first delegate nominating state.

The debate, due to its sharp questioning, blunt answering and occasional outbursts, has sparked much online discussion in the last two days and may have played a crucial rule in deciding the outcome of today's straw poll.

Petrash: Scrap the 'super committee'

President Obama said this week that "there is nothing wrong with the country. What's wrong is our politics." Nice play on words, Mr. President, since our country's past, and future, success is predicated on our politics. We've done well with it since 1776. What's wrong with our country is our president's mindset, his political ideology that socialism is what's best for our country. What's wrong with our country is his gargantuan, and historical, spending of a trillion dollars toward social reform programs, including Obamacare. Fifty six percent of the people of this country oppose his politics. The state of the economy rests squarely on his, and his party's, shoulders. What's wrong with our country is his leadership.

Five Best Tuesday Columns - National - The Atlantic Wire

Max Boot says the U.S. is too slow on Libya The United States' delayed recognition of the rebel government in Libya is indicative of a general "'lead from behind' doctrine," writes Max Boot in The Wall Street Journal. The president committed to military action only after weeks of rebel lobbying. "With the president of the U.S. having called for Gadhafi's ouster, our failure to deliver is making us look ineffectual," Boot argues. "It discourages democrats across the Middle East and encourages tyrants." The United States should step up its war effort to conclude the operation more swiftly, he says, and then, taking lessons from Afghanistan and Iraq, remain invested in preventing an insurgency from developing in the absence of a dictator.

School daze, school daze; good old Golden Rule days

Editor's Note: William H. Gross is the Managing Director of PIMCO . This is a republishing of his Investment Outlook .

A mind is a precious thing to waste, so why are millions of America’s students wasting theirs by going to college?

All of us who have been there know an undergraduate education is primarily a four year vacation interrupted by periodic bouts of cramming or Google plagiarizing, but at least it used to serve a purpose. It weeded out underachievers and proved at a minimum that you could pass an SAT test. For those who made it to the  good  schools, it proved that your parents had enough money to either bribe administrators or hire SAT tutors to increase your score by 500 points. And a degree represented that the graduate could “party hearty” for long stretches of time and establish social networking skills that would prove invaluable later on at office cocktail parties or interactively via Facebook.

Health survey not so shadowy and nefarious after all

Remember that McKinsey & Co. survey that showed employers planned to drop their health coverage for tens of millions of their workers once Obamacare kicked in, potentially making the health law’s costs skyrocket? And then remember the outrage from Obamacare fans who claimed the survey must have been conducted along some pretty nefarious lines in order to reach such outrageous (to them) conclusions — and said McKinsey’s failure to release its methodology and full results were tantamount to proof of such nefariousness?

HSAs Increasingly Popular Despite Attacks from Obamacare

The president's healthcare overhaul places a significant burden on health savings accounts, which are becoming more popular among families and small businesses

Health savings accounts (HSAs) are rapidly growing and gaining popularity among American families and employers, according to recently released data from America’s Health Insurance Plans (AHIP). During the past three years, the number of people with HSAs has nearly doubled. In 2010 alone, they grew by 14 percent. Over 11 million Americans currently reap the benefits of HSAs: tax-exempt savings, tax-deferred growth, and an unmatched control over healthcare choice.
