Acting on a Dream: A Look Into the Life of an Undocumented Student - San Lorenzo, CA Patch

At first glance, 22-year-old Keyla Santizo seems wise beyond her years —carrying herself as a strong, intelligent young woman with a bright future.

But Santizo can't drive to school and or apply for any academic scholarships.

It's not that she can't afford a car or doesn't have the grades to apply for a scholarship.

Immigration groups urge Brown to sign part two of California Dream Act - The Times of India

CALIFORNIA: California Governor Jerry Brown has until Oct 9 to sign legislation which would give the state's 41,000 undocumented students access to Cal Grants, UC grants and other state-funded scholarships for college education.

The bill - known as AB131 - is the second half of the California Dream Act, engineered by California state Assemblyman Gil Cedillo, a Democrat from Los Angeles. Brown July 25 signed into law AB130, the first half of the California Dream Act, which allows undocumented students to apply and receive privately-funded scholarships (I-W, Aug. 12). AB131 had been gridlocked in the Senate Appropriations committee, but passed with amendments, before moving on to the full Senate for a vote Sept 1. The bill then went back to the State Assembly for approval of the amendments and was handed to the governor for approval Sept 9.

The Wolf Pack Press - Rancho Dominguez Preparatory School - Price of Dream Act Still Unknown

There are many conflicts and con- troversial topics in today’s’ world. These conflicts involve the economy; another is financial aid. but for U.S. citizens’ any- more; it’s also for undocumented students or, illegal aliens.

States such as Texas, California, New York, Utah, and New Mexico(community colleges) have passed state laws providing in-state tuition for those who have attend- ed high school for at least three years.

Generous or not?

The letter to the editor in the T-R by Darrell Meyer "Put you money where your mouth Is" caught my eye. He certainly has a point. It is very easy to be generous with other people's money. Apparently the businesses and individuals listed in the advertisement on 9-25-11 in favor of the DREAM Act feel that illegal alien students should be able to attend college with help from the taxpayer citizens of Iowa.

Democrats accuse Smith of hypocrisy - San Antonio Express-News

WASHINGTON — House Democrats on Thursday denounced an immigration bill authored by Rep. Lamar Smith as “petty partisan politics” and accused Smith of being a hypocrite for introducing the measure to spur deportations.

Smith, R-San Antonio, filed the “Hinder the Administration's Legalization Temptation” Act, or HALT, after the administration announced it would prioritize deportations to remove violent criminals and terrorists.

Senate moves forward with college aid for illegal immigrants

Illegal immigrants would be allowed to get privately financed student aid administered by state universities and colleges under legislation approved Thursday by the state Senate and sent to Gov. Jerry Brown.

Brown is expected to approve the measure, which is part of the California Dream Act, having declared during last year’s election campaign that he would have signed a similar bill.

Less than $14,000 spent on petition drive

The latest campaign finance filings show that freshman Del. Neil C. Parrott spent just under $14,000 on his successful drive to put the Maryland Dream Act on the 2012 ballot.

FOX News Still Can’t Decide Whether to Respect or Hate Latinos - COLORLINES

When my daily Google Alert snagged an article attributed to Fox that used the word “undocumented” rather than the i-word I was shocked. But a short click later and I found that this article appeared on Fox News Latino, while the same story was covered on Fox News, which used the i-word throughout.

Trying to Keep the Dream Alive

More students may soon gave access to funds to help pay for college.

State senators are scheduled to vote today on a measure that if passed would allow some undocumented students to apply for private scholarships and grants to help them pay tuition at California public colleges and universities.

Could Rubio Help Deliver Latino Voters to the GOP in 2012?

When Florida Republican Marco Rubio accepted his U.S. Senate victory in November, he spoke about the immigrant experience of his Cuban-exiled parents and the dreams they had for their children in America. But he also spoke about the wrong direction he believed the country was headed and the need to take on pressing economic issues in Washington.

fight through Congress at the end of last year, Sen. Dick Durbin is preparing to reintroduce the bill this session, his office confirmed last week. SGA elections: What's the point?

With Student Government Association elections now underway, this university certainly has a lot to look forward to in the upcoming week. McKeldin Mall sidewalks will be covered with ridiculous slogans chalked every four inches. Candidates, who will soon be smelly from not laundering their party T-shirts, will be distributing pens and other knickknacks to passing students. And for those of you lucky enough to live on the campus, "dorm storming" — a campaigning tactic where SGA candidates sneak into dorms in order to talk to students — will become an almost daily annoyance.

Las Vegas Sun

I had extraordinarily low expectations for the Las Vegas mayor’s race. But it has managed not to meet them.

I have writtenbeforethat the office itself is fundamentally inconsequential, so it somehow seems fitting that an inconsequential 2 percent of Southern Nevada’s population will decide who “leads” the region’s largest city in the post-Oscar Goodman era.
