Duck volleyball topples another No. 1

By Oregon Media Services Published: Nov 12, 2011 at 3:08 PM PST

EUGENE - Facing an 0-2 deficit against a No. 1-ranked UCLA team that had won eight straight, the No. 20 University of Oregon volleyball team (18-7, 11-6) rallied to beat its second top-ranked foe of the season and all-time Friday night at Matthew Knight Arena.

After a very slow start, Oregon rallies to edge Washington State in five sets

Down two sets to none against Washington State on Friday, the 18th-ranked Oregon volleyball team knew what was coming as it retreated to the locker room for a 10-minute intermission before the third set.

“We got chewed out,” said UO sophomore setter Lauren Plum.

And for good reason.

Before a crowd of 1,135 at Matthew Knight Arena, the lifeless Ducks came out with no energy against the Cougars, dropping the first two sets, 21-25 and 17-25, before roaring back to life.

Oregon Ducks leading movement to keep cheerleading on sideline

By Rachel Bachman, The Oregonian, Portland, Ore.

April 24--Gone is the glitter. Gone are the pompoms, megaphones and signs. And, in the most striking sign of evolution from an activity still largely known for titillation: no skirts.

Athletes on the team that arrived at the University of Oregon four years ago as competitive cheerleading wear the kind of compression-style jerseys you'd see at a football workout and shorts you'd see in competitive volleyball. The gear, down to the covered midriffs, is by design.

Pac-10 led by deep Washington squad

The Pac-10 may only receive two invites to the NCAA tournament this season, and for now, only two teams appear worthy.

The Huskies slipped up a bit this past week, falling by two points on the road against Stanford. But UW didn’t dwell on the loss long, bouncing back to rout California on Sunday.

There is no doubt that the Huskies are the deepest team in the conference and they hold close to a 10-points-per-game advantage over the next highest scoring team. It is hard to see UW losing a conference game at home, where they are almost impossible to beat.

Oregon women’s basketball: THE PRESSURE POINT | Taking on a greater scoring load, Nia Jackson drives Oregon’s offense

When a game is tight and a point guard is looking for places to distribute the basketball, the hoop isn’t a bad place to go.

Especially when that point guard is scoring the way Oregon junior Nia Jackson has over the past two weeks.

Jackson enjoyed the most prolific scoring stretch of her career during three games this month, averaging 23 points in narrow wins over Washington State and Washington and a close loss to Southern California. Only double-teaming by UCLA, and a cold that Jackson is only now getting over, finally slowed her down in the Ducks’ loss to the Bruins on Saturday.

Packed house expected for first women's Civil War in Matthew Knight Arena

By Lindsay Schnell, The Oregonian

CORVALLIS -- Oregon State women’s basketball coach Scott Rueck has always stressed to his teams that they can’t play to the scoreboard. Instead, Rueck says, players should be focused on how they’re executing offensive and defensive sets.

Greg Hansen: Just like Cats, Stoops loses out

The truth, the whole truth, half-truths, shades of the truth and other items admissible as sports news:

• The only thing Mike Stoops lost in the 2010 football season was his contract leverage. Had the Wildcats beaten USC and ASU, winning nine games, he surely would've forced director of athletics Greg Byrne to re-do his contract with some significant financial increases. Now it becomes a very public waiting game.

Oregon men’s basketball: One last dance | UO plays its 1,116th — and final — game at Mac Court tonight

The New Year will ring in with a final verse of Auld Lang Syne for McArthur Court tonight when Oregon plays host to Arizona State in the last men’s basketball game at the 84-year-old facility.

“This is a very special game for us,” UO sophomore E.J. Singler said. “We’re looking forward to it. It means a lot to us.”
