The Bulldogs racked up 570 yards and beat Tennessee-Martin 55-17 behind a two-touchdown night from senior running back Vick Ballard.

Ballard rushed only 11 times for 102 yards and averaged 9.2 yards a carry. The game was Ballard's fourth 100-yard outing of the season, and his first multi-touchdown performance since the Bulldogs' season opener against Memphis.

10. I'm not sure if there has ever been a more star-crossed player at Florida than John Brantley. He came to UF with so much promise, sat behind arguably the best player in college football and then when he got his chance he was stuck in an offense that was mot manageable for a player with his skills. And when he finally gets Charlie Weis as his coordinator — a match made in heaven — he suffers the ankle injury in the biggest game of the year. You can't help but feel for Brantley. And for Jeff Driskel, who gets his first start at Death Valley. The good news for Driskel is that it's not at night. The bad news is that LSU leads the ball-hawking SEC in turnover margin at plus-12.

Who says tough nonconference scheduling doesn't pay? The Tigers had arguably the least-impressive performance amongst the top three teams in the polls, getting precious little going on the ground in the first half against Kentucky and needing another Tyrann Mathieu defensive touchdown to crack 30 points ... at home ... against a Wildcat defense that had yielded 48 to Florida the week before in Lexington. The Tigers' Week 3 defensive lockdown of Mississippi State looked a little less impressive, too, after Georgia made Dan Mullen's offense look nearly as impotent and LSU had.

Random Thoughts from Around the SEC - Roll 'Bama Roll

With week five of the college football season in the books, a few thoughts:

Alabama: 'Bama hammers the Hogs and the Gators in back-to-back weeks and now gets to feast on a lot of bad football teams during the stretch run. The LSU clash looks to be the stuff of legend, but it's going to take substantial mattress defecation to lose to anyone else on the remainder of the schedule. For 'Bama the biggest challenge now is to stay healthy and not to get distracted by the ultimate prize such that an untimely upset sinks the crimson and white battleship. Trent Richardson won't beat out Russell Wilson and Andrew Luck for the stiff arm trophy in early December, but his performance in the Swamp was Heisman-esque.

On July 7th, Warren Central kicker Devon Bell cast his lot to Dan Mullen and the Mississippi State Bulldogs.  It was a very big day in the young man’s life and a decision that he has not had any regret about.  With his high school season well underway and signing day a few months off, Bell has a clear goal for next season, arrive on the MSU campus and win a job.

Week Five is in the books and SEC West is starting to pull away as expected from the SEC East.  Alabama and LSU are head and shoulders above anyone else in the league right now while Arkansas and Auburn are next up on the conference’s “most dangerous” list.

This team barely missed making a bowl game in his first year in 2009 at 5-7, but came back to post a 9-4 record in 2010.
