Montgomery working to make changes

By Ned Griffen, The Day, New London, Conn.

July 1--MOHEGAN -- Renee Montgomery didn't play well enough to be chosen to play for the U.S. women's national team at the FIBA world championships last fall. And she knew it.

"When I got cut from the team, I felt like I wasn't the guard they should've have picked," Montgomery said. "It's not like you're saying, 'Oh, man, they cheated me out of a spot.' I didn't play well enough to make the team, and that makes you go and reassess things and do things differently.

Renee Montgomery's Offensive Surge Has Helped Connecticut Sun

By John Altavilla, The Hartford Courant, Conn.

July 1--UNCASVILLE -- Renee Montgomery calls Geno Auriemma a "purposeful" texter, which means when she gets a message from her former UConn coach there's usually a good reason.

Such as earlier this season, when Auriemma reached out to his former All-American guard, one his USA Basketball team players cut before the 2010 World Championship in the Czech Republic.

Who's better, Moore or Taurasi? - NewsTimes

STORRS -- There was a time when Maya Moore was a starry-eyed youngster looking on in awe of UConn All-American Diana Taurasi, easily influenced by her every move both on and off the court. She was sitting behind one of the baskets with her Georgia Magic AAU teammates at the 2003 Final Four at the Georgia Dome in Atlanta.

No Friends In Basketball, Just Opponents - UConn Women's Basketball, Connecticut Sun & WNBA Blog

UConn coach Geno Auriemma has met thousands of people and coached hundreds of them, many of whom get Christmas cards from his family and eat dinner in his home.

When he discovered his first-round game in the Philadelphia Regional would be against Hartford Sunday at Gampel Pavilion, he shrugged his shoulders and gave one of his it is what it is looks.

Top Picks

NCAA WomenÂ’s Basketball Tournament (11 a.m., ESPN2) After winning a school-record 72 straight games, all by double-digits, Geno AuriemmaÂ’s Connecticut Huskies are expected to have a cakewalk to the Riverwalk in San Antonio, site of the Final Four. ThatÂ’s where a possible semifinal against Tennessee looms, as Pat SummittÂ’s Lady Vols have rebounded from last yearÂ’s first-round exit to garner a No. 1 seed and restore order in womenÂ’s hoops. Pat leads Geno 8-6 in the all-time NCAA-title race, but 62 other teams (including top seeds Stanford and Nebraska) are out to trump that story line, beginning with this weekendÂ’s wall-to-wall first-round action.

Berry Tramel: Joe Castiglione probably won't play a wild card

More people will be watching when OU's next men's basketball coach is hired.

And I don't even mean a 31-year-old Jeff Capel , a stealth candidate by any description.

Auriemma laments expectations at UConn

HARTFORD, Conn. –   Connecticut coach Geno Auriemma laughs as he recalls a greeting he received from another coach during last year's Final Four.

"Hey, congratulations. You guys had a nice year," the coach told Auriemma.

A nice year? UConn was about to win its seventh national title, and 78th consecutive game. But to many UConn followers, that was considered "a nice year."

All Access: A day with UConn's Maya Moore - Standard-Examiner

STORRS, Conn. -- Maya Moore can barely take another bite of salmon. Her eyes transfixed on the TV set, she's about to lose her lunch.

"C'mon!" she shouts. "How could they get that wrong?"

A blown call? A missed shot? A messed-up play?

Nope, this is much more riveting. This is how she watches the TV game show "Family Feud" every day, and today the best player in women's college basketball is hollering at yet another poor, overmatched contestant.
