Lisa Mezzacappa Does Not Make Dinner Party Music

Myles Boisen Upright bassist Lisa Mezzacappa has been building a steady reputation in northern California for the last decade. Her nimble basslines and arresting compositions have brought her beyond the Bay Area, where she lives, including a rare tour through Los Angeles. Her band the Bait & Switch performs at Little Tokyo's Blue Whale tonight.

LouFest Interviews: The Low Anthem's Jeff Prystowsky On Collecting Sounds

Courtesy of the Low Anthem For the past five or six years, east coast folk group the Low Anthem has made a reputation as a folk connoisseur and developed and nourished a soft spot for quirky instruments. Multi-instrumentalist Jeff Prystowsky talked to us about the band's organic musical and sound approach and what they'll be working on next.

The Lowdown: Mike Badger | Altsounds.com Features

Back in 1980, in the dark and deserted ruins of the once almighty port of Liverpool, a young chap named Mike Badger, upset about the destruction of the North by then prime minister Margaret Thatcher, found time was on his hands, and subsequently, found a band that would only see the charts after his departure. Unlike similar cases though - like Beatles Pete Best, who was famously sacked just before the big breakthrough and subsequently only released novelty albums with questionable titles like ‘Best of the Beatles’ - Badger knew what he was heading for. He had a vision all along.

RHYS, Gruff - Hotel Shampoo

In memoriam, 2010: Folks of note and notoriety who have passed on

The world lost many of those who made it turn in 2010, many who inspired dread, angst, perplexity, obedience, imitation, laughter, and love. It’s a time to celebrate their achievements, mourn their misfortunes, and marvel at a world that has such people in it.

—Newsmakers: Notable conclusions included those for John du Pont, 72, member of the Delaware familial dynasty, who died at the Laurel Highlands state prison near Somerset, Pa., while serving a sentence for murder; Mark Madoff, 46, son of convicted finance fraud Bernie Madoff; and fashion designer Alexander McQueen, 40. Porn king Bob Guccione, 79, went to the final penthouse.

News That Matters: The DREAM Act is Voted Down

• National union leaders meet with Obama, concerned about his back-pedaling on tax cuts for the wealthy. That bill, meanwhile, is signed, and should be sealed and delivered by New Year’s.

• Procedural votes kill the immigrant-aiding DREAM Act in the Senate, but a big-deal food safety bill, which was nearly undone by improper protocol after it passed weeks ago, passed again.
