Red Bluff High: Golden Grads reunite

Mike McKenna of Sacramento greets Kay Supan-Frost of Rancho Cordova at their 50th reunion. The two were a part of the golden grads group from the Red Bluff Union High School class of 1961 who toured the school Friday afternoon.

The Golden Grads of Red Bluff Union High School from the class of 1961 returned to the school Friday for a chance to catch up with each other while taking a tour of the school.

This is all so different, said Leslie Coffman. The main building when we were here was an old building. I think it was built in 1916.

It had a big stair case and pillars like the old courthouse.

Ted Walker and Tom Mealer were both football players when they attended Red Bluff High and they remember their team was undefeated their junior year and only lost one game, to Chico for the championship, in their senior year.

A lot more of the alumni came to our games, Walker said.

Now they got the visitors next to us in the bleachers. You can't yell and holler when they're next to you. They need bleachers for visitors.

Both men said they are disappointed the team has not been winning this year but it's not for a lack of talent.

Walker, who still lives in Red Bluff, said what he most remembers about homecoming was getting out of school early on Friday for a pep rally and the football game.

The buildings are the biggest change, said Ken Hinkle of Red Bluff. They still do many of the same things the queen and courts and football games.

Hinkle, who taught at Vista Middle School for 31 years, said he came to Friday's reunion out of curiosity, nostalgia and the chance to see old friends. Other than four yearsof teaching high school in Bakersfield, he has stayed in the area.

I just couldn't stay away, Hinkle said.

Mike McKenna now lives in Sacramento and he mostly remembers the crowds at football games, he said.

I remember how the spirit of the audience contributed to the players on the field and motivated them, McKenna said.

McKenna said he came to the reunion because he was curious about the lives of his former classmates.

I want to hear about their lives the triumphs and the tragedies, McKenna said. This may be the last time I get to see many of my classmates.

After high school, McKenna spent four years on active duty in the Air Force and attended St. Mary's College of California in Moraga before eventually settling down in the Sacramento area.

He retired seven years ago from the California Employment Development Department.

Kay Supan-Frost remembers homecoming for the winning of the football games, she said.

We won a lot and there were dances and football games, said Supan-Frost who now lives in Rancho Cordova. It was all very fun.

She came to the reunion for the chance to see her hometown again and try to recognize everyone, she said.

I stayed in Red Bluff until 1974, working at Brentwood until I moved away, Supan-Frost said. I had five children, including a set of triplets in 1966.

Supan-Frost worked in a convalescent home in Rancho Cordova for a few years after she moved there before becoming a bartender at Mather Air Force Base for 17 years.

After the base closed, she went to work for Raley's as a cake decorator.

The golden grads took a tour of the school Friday afternoon led by junior Alex Dahnke and other students.
