It’s been ten years since we heard from Semisonic. The band's last album, All About Chemistry , was released in 2001 and faired poorly on the North American charts. Without a doubt, the Minneapolis rock trio peaked in 1998 with Feeling Strangely Fine , which featured the Grammy-nominated hit “Closing Time”. Thirteen years later and it's still the the last call anthem for all bars/clubs out there.
This year, “Closing Time” resurfaced in popular culture, partly thanks to Justin Timberlake. In the mediocre rom-com Friends With Benefits , Timberlake organizes a flash mob in Grand Central Station to the tune of “Closing Time”, all to woo Mila Kunis. I hate to admit it, but it was pretty freakin’ adorable (and Semisonic probably think getting tons of moolah from that is adorable as well).
Lead singer Dan Wilson discussed the film in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter last year: "[W]hile I really like Justin Timberlake's music and singing, when he's doing a Dan Wilson impression, I'm not sure I like that."
In a post-Semisonic world, Wilson is writing songs with some of the best in the biz. Did you know he co-wrote and produced Adele's heartbreak anthem of the year, "Someone Like You"? Well, now you know.
In fact, while Semisonic may be a mere 1990's ghost, Wilson hasn't been out of work. Over the years he's collaborated with various artists ranging from country crooner Keith Urban to pop star Missy Higgins. Wilson even had time to put out a solo album, Free Life , in 2007 which was surprisingly well-received.
As for the rest of the band, bassist John Munson formed jazz band The New Standards in 2005. He later joined forces with Dan’s brother Matt Wilson to form the soft-rock band Twilight Hours . They make the kind of music you’d hear on 97.3 EZ Rock in your mom’s van.
Drummer Jacob Slichter went on to penin 2004. The book is a witty look inside Semisonic and what it takes to make it in the recording industry. He continues to drum and write for various projects and apparently occupies Wall Street. This of course, is based off of his Facebook profile page which leaves a lot to the imagination.
There you have it. It may be last call for Semisonic as a collective but individually, the drinks keep on pouring, especially for Dan Wilson.
