Letter, 10/31: Jesus and funeral protests

As I read about the latest court battle involving the Westboro Baptist church, it finally put me over the top when Margie Phelps-Roper commented about how attorneys general "spent thousands of dollars" (" Court voids ban on funeral pickets ," Oct. 21) fighting her church's picketing of soldiers' funerals.

A Baptist friend of mine once said that the principle of "What would Jesus do?" is a good guide for a Christian's actions. I'm not a Christian, so I am not in a position to guess what Jesus would do in this situation. But as a Jewish man, I am certain what he would not do. He wouldn't travel about the land desecrating anyone's funeral for any reason. And as long as there were the naked to clothe, the hungry to feed and the afflicted to comfort, he wouldn't be spending huge amounts of money fighting for his right to desecrate funerals.

Come to think of it, there are a couple of things I think he would do. He would weep in shame for his name being used to justify this church's actions. He would forgive them.
