Cary Eckard Sr. loved teaching and loved the students at his school, said his wife, Pamela Eckard.
"He wanted to teach more than what was in the textbooks," she said. "He did a lot of contests and brought in a lot of guest speakers."
Cary Eckard Sr., 67, of Highland, died Sept. 30. He had worked 34 years for the School City of Hammond, retiring in 2000. He had worked as a public information officer for the school district and also taught English both at Gavit Middle School and Gavit High School. He also had taught at Hoosier Boys State in Terre Haute and taught driver education.
He also is survived by two sons, a daughter and a granddaughter.
He loved baseball and had an extensive baseball card collection. He was an avid Chicago Cubs fan and loved Ernie Banks and Ron Santo.
"He had gotten a lot of baseballs autographed over the years," his wife said. "His baseball cards dated back to the 1930s."
He enjoyed traveling, and loved to go out to eat. He was willing to try anything and loved everything from Spanish and German cuisine to Greek food.
On a trip to Mexico, the couple was on a boat when a diver brought up a conch.
"They ripped out the muscle, and Cary took a bite. He would try anything," she said.
Although his health failed during the later years of his life, he never complained. He could come home from the hospital after a week's stay, and would tell callers he felt fine.
"He never was a complainer," she said. "He was always easygoing. He was a good husband and father, and he was a good provider for the family."
