Jockularity for Saturday, April 30 - San Jose Mercury News

MEMORY LANE When John Adams first toted his drum to a Cleveland Indians game, he didn't think he'd still be doing so 37 years later. It's just that the old stadium's seats didn't make for optimal "seat-banging," and he was looking for an alternative. But then the drum-beating caught the attention of Bob Sudyk of the Cleveland Press newspaper. "He interviewed me and he said, 'Are you going to come to all the games?' and I said, 'I don't know,'" Adams recalled for MLB.com. "He said, 'Are you going to be at Tuesday's game?' and I said, 'I don't know, I don't think so.' But when he wrote the article, he said, 'If you want to hear John, come out to tonight's game, and you'll hear his drum.' So, not to make a liar out of Bob, I showed up with my drum, and then I came to the next game and the next game and the next game."

America can display a strange sexist standard on child sexual abuse. When an adult woman assaults a teenaged boy, Hollywood laughs this off as a teen dream come true. The topic was great fodder for '90s teen shows like "Dawson's Creek," with not a drop of judgment inserted, proving that when Hollywood pleads it's only "reflecting reality," it's really only reflecting its own reality.

"America's Next Great Restaurant" (7 p.m., KARE, Ch. 11) may be far from a TV hit, but let's hope it has some good taste when it comes to picking a winner in tonight's season finale. Clash of the Big Three titans | Boston Celtics | projo.com | The Providence Journal

WALTHAM, Mass. — Over the last three seasons, the Boston Celtics have found ways to load up and knock LeBron James and Dwyane Wade out of the playoffs. Now it’s time to see what the two stars — plus big man Chris Bosh — can do together.

Ever since James and Bosh joined Wade in Miami last summer, the conventional theory held that the Heat had stacked their team enough to overwhelm Boston. That’s the plan, anyways.

LeBron’s legacy is on the line this time against Celtics

If LeBron James loses to the Boston Celtics again, The Decision will be labeled The Mistake .

Here James is, at another crossroads, playing against the very team that motivated him to move from Cleveland to Miami.

James and his Cavaliers were kicked out of the playoffs in 2008 and 2010 by the Celtics. He joined the Heat in part to get past that roadblock and get back to the NBA Finals.

A generation on, with those Games indeed accepted as an early sign of the Cold War’s aftermath, and with rulers and rebels sparring across a smoldering Middle East, a question arises: How will history recall Soccer’s World Cup 2022, which was assigned to a corner of the Middle East several weeks before the region caught fire?

Gay community divided on march

NORTHAMPTON - The city's annual Pride March will mark its 30th anniversary on May 7 with comedy, music, political speeches and a protest by a segment of the gay community that feels the event has become too commercial.

What began as a take-your-life-in-your-hands venture into the streets in 1982 has evolved over the years into a celebration of the gay community's accomplishments. Last year's event drew a record 15,000 people from as far away as Florida and Illinois, according to organizers. In an ironic twist, however, the march in which same-sex participants once kissed defiantly in front of evangelical protesters, now finds itself couched as The Establishment.

Nakilat yesterday said most of its 54-strong fleet of liquefied natural gas tankers were sailing to Far East Asia.

Nakilat is key player in Qatar’s role as the world’s largest exporter of LNG. The company owns and operates a fleet of 54 specially designed tankers to transport the super-cooled fuel to the US, Europe and Asia and also has four liquefied petroleum gas, or LPG, ships. Gulf Times – Qatar’s top-selling English daily newspaper - First Page

Qatar urgently needs a legal framework for the media, replacing the Press and Publication Law issued three decades ago, urged Jan Keulen, the new director of Doha Centre for Media Freedom (DCMF). “It should be clear what the media can and cannot do, and I hope with all my heart that this legislation will give guarantees to the media to operate according to international standards,” he told Gulf Times. The veteran Dutch journalist, media educationist and press freedom advocate, who joined DCMF on April 1, is “very much convinced that Qatar’s leadership has the political will” in this regard. The new media law should be issued after an inclusive process to ensure that the stakeholders – the media community in the country - are heard, he suggested. Based in Beirut, Cairo, Mexico City and Amman during the 1980s and 90s as a correspondent of the leading Dutch daily de Volkskrant, Keulen said that he had been guaranteed a free hand to build the DCMF . Keulen, who came from a Dutch NGO, Free Voice, also working in the field of press freedom advocacy and capacity building, has succeeded DCMF’s founding director Robert Menard who left in 2009 following differences of opinion with the Qatari authorities. “We are not going to be a centre dealing only with cases in Iceland and Argentina, but also we are focusing on Qatar. And this has to do with many issues, but one very important issue is credibility. We want to be a credible and reliable organisation,” Keulen declared. He would like to see more freedom for the media in Qatar. He believes press freedom is never done: it is a terrain which has to be conquered professionally day after day. “There are some countries which are very free, maybe like the northern European countries, but as a matter of fact the struggle for freedom continues also there, it is never a job done.” Asked about the challenges in the quest for media freedom, the 61-year-old Keulen, who started out in journalism at the age of 26 in 1976, replied there were always lots of people who did not like the truth. “That is the reason so many journalists are going through difficulties in their job; some of them even get killed in some extreme situations. “At another level, sometimes companies or governmental agencies or other institutions are not interested that others are in the know.” The recipient of the highest Dutch journalism award for his reporting of the Lebanese war, Keulen thinks it is very important to create awareness at the level of the journalists, general public, and in some cases, also at the level of the authorities. “Media freedom  includes freedom to have access to information, if you have a country where the press is completely free to write whatever they want but when they knock on the door of a ministry if there is no reply, what is it good for?”, he asked while explaining all these things were interrelated.

I-Bankers Struggle to Send Their Kids to School on $1.6 Million

An anonymous Wall Street "paymaster" has warned that salaries for mid-career investment bankers are leaving them, at least psychically, with the same woes as the rest of us. The average median pay is now $1.6 million pretax, down from $2.2 million pre-crisis. Although the base cash pay is up to $400,000, bonuses are more likely to be paid in deferred compensation, which means after taxes they're taking home a measly $320,000 (down from $700,000). Ungodly hours and travel with the promise of retiring in piles of cash in ones forties or early fifties has given way to "the prospect of the banker toiling deep into his 50s or even his 60s," says The Wall Street Journal .

WASHINGTON, DC – It is increasingly common to hear prominent American and European central bankers proclaim, with respect to the crisis of 2008-2010, the following verdict: “We did well.” Their view is that the various government actions to support the financial system helped to stabilize the situation. Indeed, what could be wrong when the United States Federal Reserve’s asset purchases may have actually made money (which is then turned over to the US Treasury)?

Oregon Ducks leading movement to keep cheerleading on sideline

Athletes on the team that arrived at the University of Oregon four years ago as competitive cheerleading wear the kind of compression-style jerseys you'd see at a football workout and shorts you'd see in competitive volleyball. The gear, down to the covered midriffs, is by design.

US Gasoline Fund: Potential Relief for Pain at the Pump

By Robert Sullivan—Exclusive to Oil Investing News

Rising prices at the pump have been putting the squeeze on vehicle owners recently, with gas prices in the United States up by close to 80 cents since the beginning of the year to a national average of $3.84 per gallon.  Gas prices are typically bumped higher through spring as demand increases in the lead-up to the summer driving season in the US, but the surge in oil prices over the last four months has dragged the cost of gas up substantially, gasoline being a refined product of crude oil. Naturally, gas prices will remain high and rising so long as crude continues its upwards march.

Gritty.

That’s the best one-word description I can come up with for Georgia’s baseball team, which took two of three games from Tennessee up on Rocky Top this past weekend. The Bulldogs clinched the series with a 5-3 win on Sunday, thanks to a four-RBI afternoon from shortstop Kyle Farmer. They came close to pulling off the sweep but lost 5-4 Friday night in 10 innings.

From agriculture to academia

Debe is well known as an agricultural village and home of the best tasting East Indian delicacies in the country. This rural image, however, will soon undergo massive overhaul as the government moves to transform the district into the epicentre of southern academia. The vibrant Southern community, which has experienced a commercial boom in recent years with an increase in small businesses, is now on the fast track to growth and development with the planned construction of the South campus of the University of the West Indies (UWI). “Now Debe will be plenty more than doubles,” declared 67-year-old resident, Bharath Ragoo, who is proud that his hometown will become south Trinidad’s centre of higher learning. Last March, President George Maxwell Richards, Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar, UWI Chancellor Sir George Alleyne and principal of the St Augustine campus Professor Clement Sankat were on hand for the unveiling of a plaque representing the handing over of lands for the campus.

Around here, owners really do mean business - Boston.com

Truth is, The Commish stepped in because he bleeds corporate green and MLB is big business and the iconic Dodgers are a huge part of it. He can’t let the team in Chavez Ravine go to ruins while Frank and Jamie McCourt have it trapped between third and home in the rundown of their divorce.

Say what you will about the Bruins’ ownership under the Jacobs/Delaware North family — and much of what you’ve said can’t be repeated here — but the team on Causeway Street has been nothing but bedrock in how its business has been run. Sure, that’s come out of your pocket, and you wanted more from Jacobs and general manager Harry Sinden back when the team was right there in the ’70s and ’80s. But there has never been the slightest fret that Jacobs/DNC couldn’t make payroll, had to borrow big bucks from Carlos Slim (see: New York Times Co.) or was about to pimp the team to the most puck-starved city in all of Canada.

We got to talking and he says "Hey, let me introduce you to somebody," and with that, he introduced me to a very pretty little gal who was/is one of the CSM's (Customer Service Manager) up there. She was running around back and forth taking care of things (like she still does today) Donna is easy to spot and if you go to WalMart at ALL, you've seen her. She's the little redhead who's continually on the move up there.

Live Review: Lil Wayne, Rick Ross, Nicki Minaj at the Staples Center | Pop & Hiss | Los Angeles Times

Indeed, you’d have to go back to the early '80s, to days of rappers in Indian headdress and bedazzled leather suits, to find anything as theatrical as Minaj, the 25-year old superstar signed to Wayne’s Young Money imprint. Emerging midway through the four-hour concert with a retinue of backup dancers, an ersatz Druid and “Gladiator” clips, Minaj’s brightly colored costume and cotton-candy-pink wig resembled a raver attempting to re-create “Babes in Toyland.”

Ron Santo and the State of Sport Broadcasting in the Modern Era | Bleacher Report

Being from Chicago and growing up listening to the late Ron Santo, I feel blessed to have been able to listen to one of the all-time best color-men in the history of sports. His presence was felt throughout his long tenure as a player and announcer for his beloved Chicago Cubs.

Inspired by a fellow writer, I started thinking about just what kind of personalities the broadcast booth needs these days. The particular article (found here) I read was about how Scottie Pippen in the booth wasn’t as exciting as it should have been because of his over-critical, pessimistic attitude. Instead, he argued that a more positive vibe was what translated best to a feel-good broadcast.

Fiesta Bowl makes strong case to BCS panel to stay in series

CHICAGO - The Fiesta Bowl made a strong case here Saturday to stay in college football's prestigious Bowl Championship Series, hoping that promises to clean up self-disclosed financial mismanagement, potentially illegal conduct and lax board oversight will be enough to keep it in play.

The bowl, during a roughly four-hour private meeting before a seven-member BCS task force, went through the myriad policy changes it has made since the March 29 release of a 276-page report revealing embarrassing problems uncovered during an internal investigation. That same day, it fired longtime Chief Executive John Junker and announced it had accepted the forced resignations of two other top executives.

The first bowl game of the 2011 college football season to be nationally televised?

That's easy.

It's the Friends of Coal Bowl, set for 3:30 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 4, (that's right, Sunday) at Milan Puskar Stadium in Morgantown. It will mark the sixth time (in a seven-year contract that expires in 2012) that West Virginia University and Marshall University will meet in the annual 'bowl' game.

NFL Mock Draft 2011 - Mocking The Draft

1. Carolina Panthers - Marcel Dareus - Alabama - DT - After weighing the pros and cons of QB Cam Newton and QB Blaine Gabbert to be the Panthers franchise QB, Ron Rivera and staff pass and follow the route of the Lions from the 2010 NFL Draft, who took DT Ndamakong Suh no.1 overall, and take DT Marcel Dareus. He immediately upgrades the run defense and will eventually attract double teams. He will give the defense someone who can push the pocket and pressure the QB up the middle allowing everyone else around him to make plays.

Kansas City Chiefs: Predicting the 2011 Depth Chart | Bleacher Report

With the arrival of defensive coordinator Romeo Crennel in 2010, the Chiefs defense improved dramatically from the 2009 season.  Out of all the defensive groups that showed improvement, perhaps no group showed as much as the linebackers.

LOLB – Andy Studebaker – With the likely departure of Mike Vrabel, and the three-year contract extension Studebaker received last year, look for him to take over as starter.  Time for Studebaker to step up and prove he deserves a starting position with the Chiefs.

Team-by-team draft capsules

Team-by-team capsules for the NFL draft on April 28-30 in New York:

LAST SEASON: Decision to turn to young players while keeping veteran-friendly coach John Fox for lame duck season backfired. Panthers weren't remotely competitive on offense, managing 16 touchdowns. Matt Moore failed miserably as starting QB. Rookie Jimmy Clausen replaced him, had few reliable targets, and went 1-9 as starter without TD pass to a WR. Run game, so potent in 2009, disappeared until it was too late. Defense held up early, but eventually cracked from injuries, huge time of possession discrepancy and poor starting field position.

The ‘A’ Club: Getting the ‘Kill’ (Jerry Kill)

Sports | Friday, April 22, 2011 1:56 pm by Tom Yelle | Comments Off

For a half century, it has been a challenge for organizers of the Anoka Letterman’s ‘A’ Club to come up with an interesting, informative program.

That has meant delivering a special theme notably in the form of well-known personality as the guest speaker.

Shooter Now: Coach Jerry Kill 'is more intense' than Tim Brewster

Quarterback MarQueis Gray, who's expected to start as a junior for the Gophers next season, asked to compare his new coach, Jerry Kill, with his former coach, Tim Brewster: "Coach Kill is more intense. He's all in the player's face. He's going to get after you if you're not doing anything right. The guys are buying into that. God is loving him and we're going to do great things this year."

Much more than middling | StarTribune.com

Tracy Claeys speaks about the battle at middle linebacker, between senior holdover Gary Tinsley and sophomore newcomer Brendan Beal, as a classic head-butting, may-the-best-man-win sort of arm-wrestle.

"It'll be a good little competition," the Gophers defensive coordinator said. "If you don't like competition like that, you don't belong in the Big Ten."

NIU backs competing to start - College Football Nation Blog - ESPN

The position is there for the taking, one that has traditionally been an area of strength for Northern Illinois.

With Chad Spann gone, the competition to replace him at running back has been intense. But as the Huskies prepare for their spring game Saturday, there is no clear-cut front-runner for the job.

MarQueis Gray ready to step up at QB

MINNEAPOLIS – MarQueis Gray jogs off the field on another unseasonably chilly April day at TCF Bank Stadium.

The University of Minnesota's new quarterback probably would love to hop on the bus with his teammates and head back to the Gibson-Nagurski Football Complex, where a hot shower and a hot meal await. But the junior-to-be has additional responsibilities this afternoon – and every afternoon from here on out, for that matter.

NFL Draft 2011: 7 Players the Baltimore Ravens May Select in Round 1

, like every other team, have areas of need that they will look to address through the draft.

The Ravens have made many successful selections in the drafts of previous years. The most notable of those selections was in the Ravens' firstNFLdraft in 1996, when the Ravens used their 26th overall pick to select a linebacker from the University ofMiamiby the name ofRay Lewis.

Spring scrimmage games 2011 - ESPN

• Photo gallery: Spring forward with a tour of scrimmage games

The NFL lockout has made the upcoming draft one of the most low-key in recent memory. College basketball courts are dark. Baseball is just starting its season.

So a young man's fancy naturally turns to spring football. Although most of the games are nothing more than scrimmages, fans can't seem to get enough of seeing the new players and position battles, new schemes that coaches have put in and some festivities that give a feeling that football is not far away.

U's Grant learned from the masters | StarTribune.com

Bobby Knight, the great college basketball coach, told me once that when he was recruiting, he not only is looking for great athletes but athletes who have been winners.

Well, if you were a coach looking for a winner, you wouldn't pass up Ryan Grant, now a Gophers linebacker. He played linebacker and defensive back at Eden Prairie High School before going 27-0 as the starting quarterback as a junior and senior, leading the Eagles to Class 5A state titles in 2006 and '07.

"When Beautiful People Do Ugly Things" chronicles the 12 hours both before and after their wedding ceremony.

Ravens' Top Ten Draft Successes: #6 - Baltimore Beat Down

When the Minnesota Vikings hesitated in making their selection in the 2003 NFL Draft, the Jacksonville Jaguars and Baltimore Ravens jumped in to make their picks, selecting QB Byron Leftwich and Terrell Suggs, respectively. Leftwich had been on the Ravens radar but they never expected Suggs to drop to them at the 10th pick. They grabbed him right away and then traded up later in the first round to draft QB Kyle Boller. The fact that both Suggs and Boller were drafted in the first round of the 2003 NFL Draft is the only thing they have in similar as far as they playing careers.

Baltimore Ravens

Top needs:

1. Cornerback: Injuries have really hurt this position in recent years, and now three of the Ravens' four best cover guys -- Josh Wilson, Chris Carr and Fabian Washington -- are free agents. Baltimore likely will lose two of these three, and on a defense that loves to blitz and play man schemes behind it, the corner position is very important.

ProFootballWeekly.com - Draft Dose: Who needs an outside linebacker?

A lot is expected out of an outside linebacker. At any given time, a player at that position could be asked to rush the passer, play the run or drop back into coverage. Specific strengths are sought after depending on team-specific schemes, but a complete outside ’backer will fit in any system.

Guessing the Browns' draft path

One week from the NFL Draft, and I don't have a damn clue what the Browns are going to do with the sixth overall pick.

How's that for a lead -- and for full disclosure?

I'm trying, though. I've read every mock draft in America and called just about every scout and front-office type I know, trying to pick their brains and dig for info. Some have them must have lost my number. Some are sworn to secrecy. And from what I've gathered, most of them think their guess is as good as yours in the toughest-to-predict NFL Draft in quite some time. Even walking and talking through the first four, six or eight picks didn't bring us to much of a consensus.

Where are the safe picks?

The most durable, successful selections may defy traditional thinking

The 2009 Kansas City Chiefs were the second-worst defense in the NFL when pressuring opposing passers with one or more defensive backs, allowing an opposing passer rating of 101.9 with secondary pressure. This deficiency was among the reasons they used a top-five pick on safety Eric Berry in the 2010 draft.

Legendary Detroit Lions running back and NFL Hall of Famer Barry Sanders will be on hand in New York City to announce the Lions second round pick at next weekend’s NFL Draft.

Sanders, who was the Lions first-round pick in 1989 out of Oklahoma State ranks third on the NFL’s all-time rushing list, despite playing just 10 seasons in the league.  He was the NFL MVP in 1997, a Pro Bowl selection in every season he was in the league and the 1989 NFL Rookie of the Year after winning the Heisman Trophy at Oklahoma State.

Jackson Browne delights with low-key, superbly performed show at the Michigan Theater Wednesday

Wednesday's show was decidedly low-key, with Browne's more downtempo tunes the mainstay of the night. Alternating between keyboard and acoustic guitar (he had around 17 from which to choose), Browne started off with "Barricades of Heaven," which set the pace for what was to come. There didn't seem to be a set list; Browne would appear to start playing one song, then change his mind and go into another, sometimes responding to audience requests. Other highlights of the first part of the show included "Call It a Loan," Warren Zevon's "Don't Let Us Get Sick," "Bright Baby Blues" and the set-ending "Before the Deluge," which prompted a mini-standing ovation.

Sawhney: Explaining the bowl finances

With several questions still swirling in the air following our investigative report on Stanford’s Orange Bowl finances, I decided to use my column this week to clarify the issues that the story raised.

As a quick refresher, the report was the result of a month-long investigation conducted by Ellora Israni, a Daily staff writer, and myself. The goal of the story was to ascertain how much money Stanford gained or lost from participating in the Orange Bowl and to put that figure into the context of what other schools made or lost from their BCS games. The final result, in a nutshell, was that Stanford broke even on the Orange Bowl (according to the athletic department), placing it right in the middle in terms of profit among the rest of the BCS teams. We also noted that Stanford declined to provide financial documentation, so the figure of zero net income was not independently verified.

Northwestern, Stanford schedule four-game future series | CollegeFootballTalk

OK, now we’re getting somewhere.

After years of huffing and puffing by individuals at all levels of government, it appears at least one person with the power to do so is actually going to take action against the BcS cartel.

Following three years of investigation, Utah attorney general Mark Shurtleff confirmed to the USA Today that he’s decided to file an antitrust lawsuit in federal court against the BcS at some point in the next couple of months, claiming that the BcS is “an illegal monopoly” that violates antitrust regulations.  The suit will also claim restraint of trade, with the ultimate goal of taking this legal path being “to go to a playoff and eliminate the BCS.”

Oregon returns notable offensive firepower, including explosive rusher LaMichael James, but the Ducks suffered big losses on defense.

It's 2011, and everything about college football moves faster now, from the offenses to the recruiting calendar to the media cycle. (One notable exception: NCAA investigations.) In that spirit, the Mailbag is making the earliest debut of its nine-year history this week, for two reasons. One, I'm getting married May 29, at which point I plan to vanish for a month, so I figured we'd squeeze a few more editions in beforehand. And two -- most college football fans want to read about college football no matter what time of year. Duh.

Myrtle from Papua, New Guinea, writes : The only thing more distasteful than your constant favoring of every team other than Oregon and your indefensible determination to prioritize what NFL scouts say about Jake Locker over the opinions of more knowledgeable Oregon fans is that your blog is still called the Pac-10 blog when it should be the Pac-12 blog. You should be boiled in oil after being forced to watch a "Jersey Shore" marathon. How can you live with yourself?

Brian Murphy: Boise State AD’s message can spur changes to football's postseason | Boise State Football | Idaho Statesman

Maybe this is how the revolution to take back college football’s postseason starts. Maybe it takes a well-respected athletic director to spell it out clearly to fellow administrators for the awakening to begin, to take hold.

A forehead-smacking scandal involving one of the BCS bowls provides an opening. When a conference champion loses $1.76 million to play in that bowl game, that raises more red flags.

Four-down territory: Boise's president sounds off

Plus, USC's depth issues, more Tressel and Tuel's ready to lead. Dave Miller

Four-down territory runs every Monday, Wednesday and Friday morning during the offseason.

Boise State athletic director Gene Bleymaier had a speaking engagement on Monday where he touched on a variety of subjects involving Broncos athletics , including the Mountain West TV deal and joining the Pac-12 in football. Tressel's fine may not cover Ohio State's costs

Ohio State athletic director Gene Smith said Tuesday that the $250,000 fine levied against coach Jim Tressel for violating NCAA rules may not even cover the cost of the investigation.

Declining to address the ongoing NCAA investigation into Tressel's violation, Smith said he didn't know when Tressel's problems would be resolved. LSU's Run for the 2011 BCS Title: Are There Question Marks? | Bleacher Report

On paper and basically as perceived by the SEC fanbase, LSU appears to be the front runner for a BCS 2011 national title participant. The Tigers can almost taste it after last year's 11-2 finish.

First off, the question of quarterback play needs to be answered. Will the reigns be lead by Jordan Jefferson? If so, will it be Jordan "Jekyll" Jefferson or Jordan "Hyde" Jefferson. You never know which one will show up. He himself has admitted that Mettenberger being on campus has pushed him to better his game. But will it show?

Nehlen was an assistant coach on Bo Schembechler’s staff at Michigan in 1979 when he was hired just before the Wolverines were to face North Carolina in the Gator Bowl.

Bumphis told a pair of followers "I broke my ankle today" and also said "Pray for me and my surgery in the morning please!"
