Qatar signs transportation corridor deal

(MENAFN - The Peninsula) An agreement was signed by Qatar, Iran, Oman, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan to create an international transportation corridor linking Central Asia to the Arabian Gulf, the Qatar News Agency (QNA) has reported yesterday

The agreement was signed in the capital of Turkmenistan, Ashgabat, between Qatar, Oman, Iran, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan.

The agreement provide for cooperation and facilitation of transport and transit of persons and goods as well as exports among the countries of Central Asia, Arabian Gulf, Gulf of Oman, South-West Asia and the Middle East through available transportation means including highways, railways and cargo ships across the seas.

The agreement aims to boost trade and economic cooperation among the signatories as well as the states which will join later. It was signed by the Assistant Foreign Minister for Follow-Up Affairs of Qatar, Mohammed bin Abdullah Al Rumaihi.

Ford, the second-largest US automaker, said yesterday its first-quarter profit surged 22 percent from a year ago, revved up by sales of fuel-efficient vehicles as it coped with higher commodity prices.

Ford reported $2.55bn profit for the first three months of the year "as fuel-efficient new products, continued investment in global growth and the strengthening of Ford's core business boosted results."
