TAMPA, Apr 26: The 9th world Conference on Sport and the Environment will be held Saturday April 30 through May 2nd in the capital city of Qatar. The motto of this year’s biennial meeting is “Playing for a Greener Future”.
Keynote addresses will be delivered by IOC president Dr Jacques Rogge, head of the IOC environment commission, Pal Schmitt, who is also the president of Hungary, and Achim Steiner in charge of the United Nations Environment Program. Their topic will cover “The Olympic Movement at the Heart of the Environmental Debate: Rio 1992 to Rio 2012 to Rio 2016”.
The three day program will also discuss themes such as how Olympic partners are looking for greener practices, sport and its ecological footprint, how the Olympic Movement is shaping change, and many more topics.
In conjunction with the convention, a Sport and Environment Exhibition will be held to showcase the efforts of governmental and non-governmental organizations towards protection for the environment. It will focus on implementation of green building solutions, pollution reduction, clean gas and energy usage, moisture reduction, issues with dirt and decay and other environmental challenges.
Some of the participants of the exhibition are the Qatar Olympic Committee, Ministry of Environment, Barwa & Qatar Diar Research Institute (BQDRI), Friends of Environment Center, University of Qatar, Qatar Green Centre, QABCO, IGR and Al-Kass Channel will supervise the exhibition.
Qatar won the bid to host the 2022 FIFA World Cup back in December of last year and is striving to capitalize on the country’s contribution to sport.
The last conference was hosted in Vancouver Canada in 2009 prior to the Olympic Games.
