Deputy Chief David B. Conklin Jr., renowned among local media organizations for his willingness to be subjected to interviews and respond to press inquiries, announced he will be leaving the Wilmington Police Department and has accepted a new job in Florida.
Following nearly six years at the WPD, in a tenure that saw the introduction of a geographic-based policing system, Conklin’s fellow officers will say their farewells at a celebration in his honor on Friday.
“We really will miss him, but the State of Florida will benefit from our loss,” WPD spokeswoman Lucy Crockett said in a statement. “Dave Conklin has been named Deputy Executive Director of the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles, which is the large state agency that includes the Florida Highway Patrol.”
Conklin moved to Wilmington after serving 25 years in the Virginia State Police, where he retired with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. His time at the WPD began on Oct. 3, 2005.
