The tradition of the Oyster Bowl, an annual college football game in Hampton Roads for 61 years, will return to Foreman Field in 2011.
The Monarchs’ Oct. 29 game against James Madison will be designated the 62nd Oyster Bowl, with an additional $1 added to the ticket cost to support the Shriners’ Hospital for Children.
ODU athletic director Wood Selig, a Norfolk native, made the announcement Saturday, saying in a release, “Growing up literally blocks from Foreman Field, I learned to value and appreciate the annual Oyster Bowl football game. It was an annual fall highlight for not only the local neighborhoods, but for football fans throughout the area.”
The first Oyster Bowl was played in 1946 between Granby High and Clifton (N.J.) High. From 1948-1995, the game featured college teams and future All-Americans such as Don Meredith of SMU, Navy’s Roger Staubach and Syracuse’s Ernie Davis.
In 1999, the Oyster Bowl returned, but was moved to Hampton’s Darling Stadium, where it has included appearances by Christopher Newport, Chowan, Southern Virginia and the Apprentice School. In 2010, Webber International beat Apprentice, 40-7.
