Japan said it would send nearly 25,000 soldiers backed by boats and aircraft into its disaster zone today on an intensive land-and-sea mission to recover the bodies of those killed by last month's earthquake and tsunami. About 14,300 people have been confirmed dead. Another 12,000 remain missing and are presumed dead. Some were likely swept out to sea, with others buried under rubble.
Authorities in Beijing stepped up a three-week campaign against an underground Christian church Sunday, detaining hundreds of congregants in their homes and taking at least 36 others into custody after they tried to hold Easter services in a public square, church members and officials said. The church, Shouwang, or Lighthouse, is an evangelical Protestant congregation that was evicted from its rented quarters.
