Pasadena roundup: Several Mavericks headed for regionals | High School Headlines | Chron.com - Houston Chronicle

Pasadena Memorial did well on the track at the District 22-5A meet last week, but a lack of athletes on the field kept them from a team title.

The Dobie boys ended up winning the district championship, with Deer Park finishing second and the Mavericks taking third.

"Dobie's pretty deep," Memorial coach Mike Adams said.

"They've got a lot of kids, and especially in the field events. Deer Park and Dobie both had a bunch of kids and racked up a bunch of points in the field events, where we only have five kids total."

Still, the Mavericks qualified eight boys in 11 different events, including all three relays, for the Region III-5A meet May 2-3 at Humble High School.

"We did OK," Adams said. "We didn't have a lot of guys on our varsity but the ones who we had did pretty well."

The team of seniors Saxon Smith and Jacob Torres and juniors Korey Malone and Nick Hernandez ran all three relays, taking first in the 800-meter, second in the 400 and third in the 1,600.

Hernandez added a win in the high jump, clearing 6 feet, 6 inches. Adams says he has the best chance of any Mavericks athlete of qualifying for the state meet May 13-14 at Myers Stadium in Austin.

"He's pretty good," Adams said. "He's been pretty consistent with 6-6. The last three or four meets that's where he's gone. He came out of basketball so he's just now probably getting into track shape.

"He's got a chance at the regional meet. He went out at 6-8 the other day but he can definitely do 6-8. He was up over the bar."

Smith was second in the long jump and third in the triple jump. He and Hernandez are the first boys to qualify for the regional meet in their respective field events in Pasadena Memorial history.

Senior Julian Leija added a win in the 110 hurdles and took third in the 300 hurdles.

"That was a pretty big deal," Adams said. "He came in with the second-fastest time, him and a kid from Deer Park, and he ended up winning the hurdles.

Sophomore Abrahan Chavez was first in the 1,600 run and sophomore teammate Josh Lee took second in the mile event. Junior Tyler Schoonover was third in the shot put.

The top three finishers in each event qualify for the regional meet. The top two in each event in each region advance to state.

San Jacinto College freshman Shannon Millman, a Pasadena graduate, recently was named a NJCAA Region XIV softball player of the week.

The 5-foot-5 pitcher earned the weekly honor after going a perfect 3-0 with 15 strikeouts and a 0.32 ERA, giving her a team-low 1.34 ERA and 12-5 record on the season.

The University Interscholastic League passed several amendments to its athletic rules this week, including a change to the concussion management protocol, which take effect immediately.

Under the new guidelines, borrowed from the National Federation of State High School Associations, student-athletes who sustain a concussion will not be allowed to play again on the same day.

Previously, student-athletes who suffered a concussion could return to play after 15 minutes if they were symptom free. Now those decisions must be made by a licensed health care professional.

Also, interschool football scrimmages will be allowed after six days of contact practices instead of seven, all players will be allowed to participate in golf team playoffs, and three games can be substituted for a baseball/softball tournament.

New high school bowl coming

The inaugural Semper Fidelis All-American Bowl, created by the United States Marine Corps and Junior Rank, will showcase 100 of the best high school seniors in the nation next year in Phoenix, Az.

The nationally televised bowl game with a traditional East-West format is set for Jan. 3, 2012.

The USMC and Junior Rank also partnered for The Proving Ground National Junior Combine, an invitation-only event for 300 elite juniors, and Junior Rank's national camp and combine circuit.

The partnership was designed to introduce young adults to the organizations' shared belief that athletic and academic excellence and core character development are key elements for well-rounded individuals.

The Semper Fidelis All-American Bowl will be held in conjunction with Fiesta Bowl week and the celebration surrounding the BCS bowl game in Arizona.
