Hot & Cool Jazz: Teen phenom leads quintet

The Brubeck Room will heat up with the sound of the Grace Kelly Quintet on Sunday, Oct. 23, from 4 to 6 at Wilton Library. This teen-aged saxophonist who headlines the quintet is a musical phenomenon, according to renowned musician Wynton Marsalis.

“Grace Kelly plays with intelligence, wit and feeling. She has a great amount of natural ability and the ability to adapt that is the hallmark of a first-class jazz musician,” Mr. Marsalis said. Ms. Kelly’s quintet is comprised of Jason Palmer on trumpet, Evan Gregor on bass, and Takeshi Obayashi on piano. A drummer is still to be announced.

In addition to her talents as a musician, Ms. Kelly is a vocalist, composer, lyricist and arranger. She is no stranger to performing, having played in more than 500 concerts worldwide since the age of 12, including the Montreal Jazz Festival, Newport Jazz Festival, Lincoln Center, Carnegie Hall, the Kennedy Center, the Apollo Theater, Birdland, Boston’s Symphony Hall, Juan Les Pins Jazz Festival, Dizzy’s Club Coco Cola, Tanglewood Jazz Festival, Detroit Jazz Festival, Ronnie Scott’s (London), Porgy & Bess (Vienna), Scullers Jazz Club, Regatta Bar, B.B. King’s Blues Club (New York City), Jazz Bakery (L.A.), Dakota Jazz Club, and in other venues in Europe and Asia. She has also released seven full-length albums and will graduate from Berklee College of Music in Boston in December.

In her few short impressive years, she has performed or recorded with the likes of Dave Brubeck, Wynton Marsalis, Phil Woods, Harry Connick Jr., Jamie Cullum, Frank Morgan, Esperanza Spalding, Toots Thielemans, Hank Jones, Jerry Bergonzi, Adam Rogers, Chris Potter, Rufus Reid, Kenny Barron, Dianne Reeves, Billy Hart, Ann Hampton Callaway, Cedar Walton, James Cotton and Terri Lynn Carrington, among others. Perhaps her most intensive connection has been with Lee Konitz, with whom Ms. Kelly has studied since age 13 and has collaborated on the CD, GRACEfulLEE.

The Hot & Cool: Jazz at the Brubeck Room concerts are made possible by a grant from the William and Karen Tell Foundation with special thanks to Catherine and Ed Romer and Tish and Chris Brubeck. A reception follows the concert where an assortment of CDs will be available for purchase and signing.

Advance registration is strongly suggested due to the popularity of this jazz series and the quality of the musicians who perform. Pre-registrants should arrive by 3:50 p.m. to be guaranteed seating; wait-listed and walk-ins will be admitted after 3:50 if seats are available. The suggested donation for the concert is $10.
