Attempt to kill officers results in indictments

A man accused of trying to run over two officers during an undercover drug buy was indicted on a number Monday of charges, including two counts of attempted first degree murder.

Jerry Stanton Freeman, 45, of Warren Hollow Road, was indicted on two counts of attempted first degree murder of an officer, two counts of possession of a schedule VI drug, possession of a schedule II drug, resisting arrest and evading arrest.

During a preliminary hearing earlier this month, officers testified that Freeman attempted to run over Bedford County detectives David Sakich and Chad Webster while trying to arrest him on April 20. Sakich said that Freeman came "inches" from striking him with his truck, and a number of rounds were fired at the vehicle's tires to bring him to a stop.

Freeman had to be placed in a restraint chair after "throwing a fit" at the county jail before he was to be transferred to the courthouse for his first court appearance, investigators said. He is currently being held in maximum security by the Tennessee Department of Correction.

A man accused of writing threats at the Tyson Foods facility was also indicted Monday.

Zachary Wilson, 24, faces two counts of making a false report in connection with messages he allegedly wrote on a bathroom wall, which said "We are among you, death is coming, infidel pigs."

The incidents led to heightened security and also placed the plant in the media spotlight after the written threats were made public before Christmas by a Nashville television station.
