Reuters has published a three-source report claiming Spotify already has more than 250,000 paying subscribers in the US, following its launch in July. The company hasn’t commented for the report. The streaming service certainly hasn’t lacked promotion in the US, particularly since Facebook’s music announcements at the social network’s f8 conference, where Spotify had a prominent role. However, Reuters’ claim that Spotify is getting preferential treatment on Facebook doesn’t ring true. “Every time a Facebook user clicks on the new ‘Music’ app tab on their home page they are connected to songs shared by their friends through Spotify,” claims the article. “While music services including Rdio and MOG have also been integrated into Facebook, they do not have the valuable ‘default’ status.” Music Ally understands that this is untrue: the Music page shows what people’s friends are listening to, whatever the service – we just checked and found a couple of Rdio links on our own Music page, for example. Spotify is likely to have blown past MOG and Rdio for paid subscriber numbers, although its real rival in the US is Rhapsody, which has 800,000 subscribers plus however many transition across from Napster.
