Letter: Banning breeds won’t work - Springfield, IL - The State Journal-Register

I disagree with The State Journal-Register's opinion on breed banning of pit bulls. Breed banning is always the simplistic, reactionary approach and never works to stop dog bites.

All dogs should be micro chipped at birth or soon thereafter. All vets should scan dogs for the chip and without it, not treat the animal until after the chip is inserted and ownership is registered. There should also be a sales record of dogs much like with livestock to track ownership.

The two dogs that attacked that little girl have got to go, but that does not stop a poorly informed or negligent owner from getting other dogs who might be treated just as poorly and end up just as aggressive.

It really is much like the arguments for gun control. It is always the fault of a person and the person/owner should be made to pay severely for these issues. There are always more intelligent ways to solve a problem rather than killing the innocent.

For those who like the idea of breed banning, remember: Lawmakers almost never know when to stop. Your breed could be next because pit bulls and mixes are not nearly as high on the bite frequency list as Labs and dachshunds.
