U.S. Magistrate Judge James R. Klindt on Tuesday issued an order giving Sam Kazran of Jacksonville until July 15 to respond to a motion filed by the Federal Election Commission seeking the fine.
The FEC has accused Kazran of reimbursing employees of Hyundai of North Jacksonville for making donations of as much as $2,300 each to Buchanan's 2006 and 2008 congressional campaigns.
Kazran and Buchanan were partners in Hyundai of North Jacksonville from 2004 to 2008 when the donations were made, according to the FEC. Buchanan, a Longboat Key Republican first elected in 2006, was not named as a defendant in the suit, which the FEC first filed in December.
Kazran has admitted to reimbursing employees, but said he did so at Buchanan's direction, an allegation Buchanan's campaign has denied.
Buchanan's campaign has spent more than $55,000 in legal expenses related to matters with the FEC since December.
