Former WVU head coach Bill Stewart is getting a check from WVU for $1.4 million within a few days, with another $250,000 to follow next year.
That’s the payment schedule worked out between WVU and Stewart in the $1.65 million settlement reached by the two sides on June 10 th .
WVU Assistant Athletic Director for Communications Michael Fragale said the largest portion of the settlement ($1.4 million) “will be paid to him (Stewart) in the coming days, as soon as the check clears.”
The remaining $250,000 will be paid to Stewart “on or about Jan. 2, 2012, at the beginning of the new year,” Fragale said.
WVU parted company with Stewart after tensions increased between Stewart and Athletic Director Oliver Luck over a head coach-in-waiting arrangement.
Last year, Luck fired Stewart, but agreed to keep him on for another year as the head coach with new offensive coordinator Dana Holgorsen in line to succeed him as head coach. Stewart could have also potentially stayed on another 30 months with the University in another capacity.
But the arrangement collapsed when allegations surfaced that Stewart tried to undermine Holgorsen. Luck admitted that he found no evidence of that, but said the controversy had become a distraction.
Stewart’s last day with the University was June 10 th . On that same day, Holgorsen assumed the head coaching duties.
