ST. LOUIS -- Phillies prospects Jarred Cosart and Sebastian Valle were named Thursday to the 13th annual XM All-Star Futures Game that will be played July 10 in Phoenix.
Cosart, a right-handed pitcher, and Valle, a catcher, both play for Class A Clearwater in the Florida State League. But the Threshers' battery will be in opposite dugouts for the XM All-Star Futures Game. Cosart will play for the U.S. team and Valle, who hails from Mexico, will suit up for the World team.
Valle is hitting .343 and slugging .482 with three home runs and 22 RBIs in 41 games this season for Clearwater. He hit .255 with 16 homers and 74 RBIs in 117 games last year with Class A Lakewood.
Cosart has started 13 games for Clearwater this year, going 6-4 with a 3.16 ERA. The right-hander has fanned 62 batters in 74 innings and opponents are hitting .222 against him. He played alongside Valle with Lakewood in 2010, and went 7-3 in 14 starts with a 3.79 ERA and 77 strikeouts in 71 1/3 innings. The Texas native was drafted by the Phillies in the 38th round of the 2008 Draft.
The 13th annual Futures Game can be seen live on MLB.TV, ESPN2 and ESPN2 HD and followed live on MLB.com's Gameday on Taco Bell All-Star Sunday, July 10, at 6 p.m. ET. In addition, XM Radio will broadcast play-by-play coverage of the event live on XM 175.
MLB.com will provide complete coverage before, during and after the game, and you can keep up to date by following @MLBFutures on Twitter. Fans can join the Futures Game conversation by tagging tweets with @#mlbfutures.
The Phillies have four players on their current roster who played in the Futures game, including Ryan Howard (2003), Chase Utley (2001), Joe Blanton (2004) and Domonic Brown (2010). Howard and Utley are among the 79 players who have played in both the XM All-Stars Futures Game and the All-Star Game.
Major League Baseball, along with the Major League Baseball Scouting Bureau, MLB.com, Baseball America, USA Baseball and the 30 Major League Baseball clubs, selected the 25-man rosters for each club. Each organization is represented, and the World Team features players from 12 countries and territories. Players from all full-season Minor Leagues were eligible to participate.
