York police: boy, grandmother found living in woods

A 7-year-old boy is under protective custody of the Department of Social Services after York County authorities say they found the child and his grandmother living in a tent in the woods, according to television reports.

According to WSOC-TV, police say Janice Dowd had paid a deposit for an apartment in Clover. But the landlord wouldn't let the pair move in because Dowd didn't not have enough money to turn on all the utilities, police told the television station.

WSOC said the family bounced from place to place, ultimately living in a makeshift tent in the woods.

Dowd's daughter has reportedly paid the utilities bills so she can move into the apartment, according to WSOC. The boy is in protective custody until a hearing is scheduled, the station said.
