Redskins QB competition continues: If either John Beck or Rex Grossman is interested in being the Redskins starting quarterback this season, neither one has done that much to show it. Both signal callers were alternately solid and shaky during Thursday’s loss to the Baltimore Ravens, and if there’s a front-runner in the competition, coach Mike Shanahan isn’t telling anyone . Then again, as we’ve seen in recent seasons, being named the Redskins starter doesn’t mean you’ll get all of the crucial snaps (we’re looking at you, Donovan McNabb ). With an energetic looking Tim Hightower in the backfield and solid receiving targets in Santana Moss and Chris Cooley (if he’s healthy), the eventual starter in Washington has the potential to be a No. 2 quarterback in a lot of leagues…if only we knew who it was going to be. The waiting is the hardest part.
Titans not trading CJ2K: Another day, another twist in the Chris Johnson saga. On Wednesday, coach Mike Munchak said that the Titans had no plans to trade the holdout running back and that he’d be with the team “one way or another.” The two sides remain far apart on an agreement, but general manager Mike Reinfeldt expects to meet with Johnson’s agent in the very near future. Meanwhile, the alert level in Nashville is rising with the news that Javon Ringer will miss his second straight game with a sore hip, leaving the Titans without anyone who has carried the ball in a regular season NFL game. Johnson’s slide out of the first couple of rounds on draft boards is about as fast as one of his 70-yard touchdown bursts. With talk that the Titans could bring in a veteran back to fill the void, Johnson’s value continues to diminish.
Hixon, Cruz battle for No. 3 job: Giants receiver Victor Cruz has earned a reputation as Mr. August after making big plays in the past two preseasons. But after the departure of Steve Smith , Big Blue is hoping for a little more consistency from the second-year wideout, who, along with Domenik Hixon , is currently competing for the vacant slot receiver job. Hixon has been the most productive of the Giants receivers, catching six passes for 62 yards and a touchdown while Cruz, who has made a habit of acrobatic catches, has frustrated coaches with his less-than-crisp route running. Whichever one can gain a rapport with quarterback Eli Manning will likely win the job and be in store for a good number of targets during the season.
