Participants can win preparedness kit, all hazards radio

INDIANAPOLIS — State officials want to know how ready Hoosiers are for emergencies and disasters – and remind them how to be better prepared
The Indiana Department of Homeland Security and the Survey Research Center at Indiana-Purdue Indianapolis are gauging that readiness with a brief online survey. Those who participate can enter a contest for a free preparedness kit or an all hazards radio.
The survey is designed to emphasize the need for preparedness during September, which is the 8th annual National Preparedness Month.
“Being ready for a major disaster is very important and the basics of a kit can be put together without a lot of effort,” said Joe Wainscott, executive director of the Indiana Department of Homeland Security.
“Having a preparedness kit can make the aftermath of an emergency or disaster easier for individuals and emergency responders,” Wainscott said in a statement. “We hope that this survey will remind Hoosiers of the importance of being prepared and what they can do to improve their level of preparedness.”
Anne Mitchell, director of operations at the IUPUI survey center, said the state is also seeking a way to know more about the people it is serving.
“This survey will help the state gain a greater understanding of how prepared Indiana residents are and how to help increase that preparedness,” Mitchell said.
The survey is available on the state’s homeland security website at www.in.gov/dhs under “Topics of the Day.”
