Celebrity chef Rosemary Shrager revealed the official Yorkshire Sausage to the world as part of Bradford district’s Yorkshire Day celebrations.
The presenter of reality TV show Ladette To Lady unveiled the region’s latest delicacy on the steps ofIlkleyTown Hall yesterday, following a long campaign across the country.
Award-winning Ilkley butcher David Lishman, creator of the Yorkshire Sausage, spent six weeks taste-testing his recipe, even visiting Westminster to get the backing of the county’s MPs for his recipe.
It is now ready to compete with better-known regional bangers such as the Cumberland and Lincolnshire sausage to firmly establish its name on the culinary map.
Mr Lishman, described the recipe as “nothing too weird and wonderful” – a good old-fashioned pork sausage, spiced up with nutmeg, mace, parsley, white pepper and salt.
Mr Lishman spent months scouring old and new recipe books for inspiration and his was one of the six shortlisted recipes to be taken around the country for members of the public to give their verdict on the best banger.
Yorkshire Day also marks the start of the month-long Ilkley Summer Festival, beginning with a performance of the Clifton andLightcliffeBrass Band with Yorkshire-themed free tea, scones and parkin served in the Winter Garden.The town crier launched the event outside Ilkley Town Hall yesterday.
In Bradford, the bells of City Hall rang to the tune of On Ilkla Moor B’ah’at and the Yorkshire Day Declaration was read out to dignitaries.
The Lord Mayor of Bradford,Councillor Naveeda Ikram, hosted a dinner last night to mark Yorkshire Day at the Great Victoria Hotel in the city centre.
Guests were invited to raise as much money as possible for the Lord Mayor’s Appeal during the Yorkshire-themed three-course meal.
Meanwhile, Bradford amateur sailor Andy Cheetham was celebrating on board the bright pink 68-foot Welcome to Yorkshire boat – England's only entry in the 40,000 mile race.
The crew of the Welcome to Yorkshire boat has challenged the nine others in the race to celebrate Yorkshire Day by providing them with a selection of Yorkshire food and drink to host their own tea party en route to Madeira.
The boat that submits the best photograph of their tea party will win a crate of Yorkshire beer when they arrive in port.
