WACO - The Belton Tigers are one round away from earning a regional tournament berth and ending the Brazos Valley domination.
The Tigers waited out about a 40-minute lightning delay and survived strong winds Monday to grab the first-round lead of the boys District 12-5A golf tournament at Twin Rivers Golf Club.
Belton hasn't qualified for the regional tournament since 2007 but shot a 330 - highlighted by freshman Andrew Paysse's district-leading 75 - and leads second-place Bryan by six strokes and third-place Harker Heights by 12. Temple got an 82 from Tim Penning, who sits fourth in the individual standings, and is in sixth after firing a 368. The Wildcats will have their work cut out when the tournament concludes today.
The top two teams and top two other individuals advance to the Class 5A Region II Tournament. If Penning shoots another solid round today, he'll become the first Temple individual to qualify for the regional tournament since Brooks Hitt in 2007.
Paysse's day marked the 12th time in 13 tournament rounds he's shot 76 or lower. Bryan's Sam DeStefano shot a 76 and is one back of Paysse. Harker Heights' No. 4 golfer, Logan Fox, is in third after shooting a 79.
Also for Belton, Nick Ratliff shot 83 and is in fifth. Zach Plunk had an 84. Preston Parker had an 88, and Travis Hites a 94.
For Temple, Joseph Kim and Kevin Arguelles had 94s, freshman Nathaniel Bass had a 98, and Calvin Robards shot a 101.
Belton's second team is in seventh place, five strokes behind Temple. Johnathan Templeton shot a 90, Jacob Sheeler 93, Kyle Revis and Ty Barber 95 and C.J. Norton 97.
Callen Chambers shot a 93 to lead the Wildcat medalists. Derek Lowe shot a 106 and Kelsey Irvine had a 115.
Holy Trinity girls roll to state, boys denied by six shots
MARBLE FALLS - Two-time defending TAPPS Class 2A girls champion Holy Trinity Catholic easily qualified for the state tournament, while the Celtics boys team fell just short Monday during the South Regional Tournament at gusty Hidden Falls Country Club.
The Lady Celtics shot a 381 and beat second-place Bryan Brazos Christian by 54 strokes.
Freshman Molly Daheim finished first with a 78, while teammate and reigning 2A individual champion Lizeth Escobedo was second with an 88. Rachel Morris placed seventh with a 106, Jordan Burress was ninth with a 109 and Mara Stonebrook shot a 122 for Holy Trinity, which will defend its state title April 18-19 at the Courses of Clear Creek on Fort Hood.
On the boys side, Huntsville Alpha Omega Academy won with a 374. Brazos Christian finished fourth, six strokes ahead of Holy Trinity for the final state berth.
The Celtics, however, weren't completely shut out. Jacob Daheim shot a 90 and finished ninth to qualify as an individual. Dakota Stonebrook had a 101, Austin Hanlon 106, Greg Noonan 108 and Chris Walker 109.
