Houston, TX- The 2010 SWAC Champion Texas Southern Tigers Football team has a treat for their fans in 2011. TSU will play six games before the home crowd next football season. The Tigers will host Prairie View, Texas College, Alcorn, Alabama State, Central State (Ohio) and Southern.
The Prairie View and Southern games will be played in Reliant Stadium; the other games will be at Delmar Stadium.
The traditional Labor Day Classic will not be played this season because PV accepted an invitation to the MEAC/SWAC Challenge which is scheduled for September 4th. Unfortunately for TSU, the short notice left a huge hole at the top of the Tigers schedule.
We have tried desperately to find an opponent for the Labor Day weekend since Prairie View announced they were playing elsewhere on that date, said TSU athletics director Dr. Charles McClelland. The positive for us is that we now have six home games which should make our season ticket packages more attractive to our fans and supporters.
TSUs homecoming game will be on October 22nd against Central State (Ohio) at Delmar Stadium.
Texas Southern will be led by interim head coach Kevin Ramsey in 2011. Ramsey spent the last two years as the Tigers defensive coordinator. His squad was the best NCAA Division I (FCS) defense in the nation last season. He served as defensive secondary coach for the Arizona Cardinals. But more impressive than that is the fact that Ramsey was the defensive coordinator for the University of Georgia where the team won the Outback Bowl in 2000. He coached linebackers at Kansas State, he was defensive line coach and secondary coach at Northwestern University, a defensive secondary coach at the University of Tennessee where the team won the Fiesta Bowl in 1999, and the Orange Bowl in 1998, and was SEC Champions from 1997 1998. Prior to that, Coach Ramsey was defensive secondary coach at the University of West Virginia where the team won the Sugar Bowl in 1994, and was the Big East Champions in 1993.
