People digest

Comedy Central host Stephen Colbert joined a star-studded cast Thursday night in the New York Philharmonic's semi-staged theatrical production of Stephen Sondheim's "Company" at Lincoln Center. Colbert, who is a huge Sondheim fan, did old-style show dancing in "Side by Side by Side," sang of the mysteries of marriage in "Sorry, Grateful," and traded karate moves with film and stage star Martha Plimpton.

Also in the cast were Neil Patrick Harris, who Broadway fans know is not merely the star of "How I Met Your Mother"; Jon Cryer, who's got some time on his hands since the shutdown of "Two and a Half Men"; and Christina Hendricks of "Mad Men," who traded in her '60s office attire for a flight attendant's uniform.

'Idol' boot hit hard • Pia Toscano says she expected to land in the bottom three on "American Idol" but felt so overwhelmed when she was eliminated that she needed a little medical assistance.

The singer, 22, from New York City said Friday that she had a medic walk her offstage at the end of Thursday's show in Los Angeles. She says she needed help because she had a "little bit of a moment." Toscano didn't offer details but says she's fine after receiving aid — and the support of the show's judges.

Christie's to handle auction of Liz's jewelry • Christie's auction house has reached an agreement with Elizabeth Taylor's family to sell her prized jewelry collection, as well as some of her art, clothing and other memorabilia. Christie's says it is planning a series of auctions that will be announced later this spring. Taylor died last month at age 79.

Civic leader William Danforth is 85. Actor Max Von Sydow is 82. Actor Omar Sharif is 79.
