Partial lineup announced for Stir Cove concerts

Staff file photo - The Flaming Lips will return to perform at the Stir Cove on Aug. 4. The last time the band played in Council Bluffs was in 2006, pictured here as the lead singer and guitarist Wayne Coyne surfs the crowd as the band's concert begins.

Melissa Etheridge, Ben Folds, The Black Keys and The Monkees will be among the musical acts to hit the Stir Cove stage this summer – and that’s just in July.

A partial lineup for the 2011 Stir Cove Concert Series was announced Thursday night at Stir Live & Loud at Harrah’s Council Bluffs Casino & Hotel.

Twelve acts were announced for the outdoor venue, ranging from indie favorites and ’90s hit makers to country stars and hard rockers. There could be 10 or more acts still to come, according to Melissa Hardersen, marketing manager for Harrah’s Council Bluffs Casino & Hotel.

Starting the series off on May 26 will be hard rock group Hinder, known for the song “Lips of an Angel” off the band’s 2005 debut album “Extreme Behavior.”

June concert dates announced included college rock trio Big Head Todd & The Monsters with reggae band Toots & The Maytals on June 10, the Grammy-nominated indie band Mumford & Sons with Nathanial Rateliff on June 14 and honky tonk singer Gary Allan on June 25.

July is a big month of shows at the Stir Cove. The Monkees (“Daydream Believer”) start the month off with a show on July 3. The popular indie band The Black Keys with Cage The Elephant follow on July 5. The show is already a sell out.

On July 18, pop singer/pianist Ben Folds will perform, followed by a show on July 15 by the popular ’90s adult alternative rock bands the Goo Goo Dolls with Michelle Branch. The Stone Temple Pilots, one of the most popular alternative rock bands of the ’90s, will play on July 17.

Adult alternative pop star Melissa Etheridge closes out July with a performance on July 21. Etheridge’s hits include “Come to My Window,” “I’m the Only One” and “If You Want To.”

In August, the quirky pop band The Flaming Lips play on Aug. 4. Country singer Eric Church was the final act announced. He plays on Aug. 26.
