File Student designer show-off their talents at the Northwood Style Show.
Northwood University junior Molly Anaman never dreamed that the quirky sense of style she developed in high school would land her a position helping to plan one of mid-Michigan’s most popular fashion events.
But last fall that’s exactly what happened when she was named model executive co-chair of the committee responsible for planning Northwood University’s 10th Annual Style Show, “Inevitable Mystique,” which gets under way at 8 p.m. Friday in the Hach Student Life Center.
“I have always — since high school — loved fashion ... I liked to stand out and be creative with it and I always got compliments so I looked into it as a career,” said Anaman, of Saginaw, who hopes to become a stylist or a buyer for a small company.
Anaman, a fashion and marketing management student, has been working with 18 other Northwood students from various majors in the coordination and presentation of “Inevitable Mystique.” This year’s show combines an eclectic mix of mystery, fashion and art to illustrate how life is portrayed by the fashion that a person chooses.
“We are looking at everything from the depths of greed and the battles of life to a much better place of peace and how we can interpret it into fashion,” said Jill Ouellette, professor and chair of the fashion marketing program.
“For example, the show may feature one ensemble for the business world and then right next to that, similar components of the outfit that may be jazzed up for a nightclub. We don’t really want to wear it just one way ... it’s about how you can get more mileage out of your outfit,” added Ouellette, who is also advisor to the show’s student committee.
The show will feature both designs created by Northwood students and those provided by local vendors such as My Secret Garden and Urban Laundry, both of Bay City; The Buckle, of Midland; and Calvin Klein, the Gap, Wilson’s Leather and Perry Ellis, all of Birch Run.
“It’s really two shows in one — 10 student designers who designed all their own clothing — and then that of the students who worked with vendors to add to the style,” said Samantha Higgins, 20, a third-year fashion marketing and management student who expects to graduate in December. Higgins, a native of Tuscola County, hopes to go into the marketing side of fashion.
“The show is based around the different personalities that you come across in your life portrayed through fashion and clothing and a person’s fate and how their actions add to their final fate,” said Higgins, the show’s public relations chair who develops press releases, handles ticket sales and RSVPs and assists in the distribution of posters.
The 19-member student committee was responsible for organizing and presenting all aspects of the show including theme-selection, set production, fund-raising, event planning, public relations, scheduling and vendor recruitment. The show’s chair, McKenzie Rowley, of Durand, began working on this year’s event in May. Three executive board members were selected within a month after last year’s show, the full committee was formed in the fall and volunteer student models were recruited in January.
Tickets are $30 a person or $55 a couple, which includes a gala reception immediately following the event. To purchase tickets, or for more information, visit the show’s website at www.northwood.edu/fashionshow or call Julie Meyer at (989) 837-4297.
