A World War II veteran who survived the attack on Pearl Harbor is to be honored by having a hill, which, at 195 feet, is the highest summit in Plymouth County, named for him.
At the request of Veterans Agent Paul Provencher, selectmen voted unanimously Monday night to name the hill, located off of Chestnut Street, for Private First Class Dominic Falconeiri.
Falconeiri is one of six Middleboro service men who survived Pearl Harbor. He was honored posthumously by the town on Memorial Day 2005 along with the other five Middleboro service men that survived that battle.
On December 7, 1941, which became known as Pearl Harbor Day, Falconeiri was at his post as an Observation Station Operator with Headquarters Battery of the 2274th Hawaiian Seacoast Artillery Command with the allied forces attacked.
A lifelong resident, Falconeiri resided at 70 West Grove St. when he enlisted in the Army on July 9, 1940, at age 22. He was honorably discharged in 1945 and returned home.
The Falconeiri family has lived in Middleboro for generations and held a place of prominence due to their residential construction business.
“It would be fitting to honor the family by naming a hill for Dominic Falconeiri,” said Provencher.
Falconeiri received the following military awards and decoration: the Army Good Conduct Medal, the American Defense Service Medal and the Asiatic Pacific Theater Campaign Ribbon.
