The focus on leaders in this election has made the campaign almost completely about image, making the use of advertising in both traditional and social media an important part of how leaders are portrayed and what Canadians think of them, say political experts.

"What is different this time I think is it's not about the parties, it's about the leaders and although these elections have been increasingly about the leaders and how you feel about the leaders, this election it's almost totally that," said Alan Middleton, a marketing professor at York University in Toronto.
