Chris Level of RedRaiderSports.com reports freshman Texas Tech receiver has signed a baseball contract with the New York Mets.
The Mets drafted Marquez out of Odessa High School in Odessa, Texas, in the 16th round of the 2011 MLB Draft.
The signing does not end his Texas Tech football career.
Instead, Marquez's signing actually benefits the Red Raiders. The Mets agreed to pay for Marquez's college education on the condition he plays baseball with the Mets' organization during the summer months.
It also allows the Red Raiders to get another player on scholarship.
Marquez's scholarship will go to freshman transfer receiver Javares McRoy from Will Muschamp's Florida program. McRoy, an early enrollee at Florida, decided to leave the program after suffering a collapsed lung during a Gators' spring football practice and the decision to playing with his big brother, Texas Tech running back Ben McRoy.
Javares McRoy, a Lakeland, Fla., resident, was granted extra time at home to recover from his injury but is expected to join the Red Raider program later this week. He has been ruled ineligible for the 2011 season due to standard NCAA transfer rules.
