Pettersson pushes into contention at Wyndham Championship

GREENSBORO — Carl Pettersson, who made Greensboro his adopted hometown during high school, moved into contention to be a two-time winner of the Wyndham Championship.

His 7-under-par 63 was the best score during Saturday’s third round at Sedgefield Country Club.

“I got it going,” said Pettersson, a former North Carolina State golfer who hit every fairway during his bogey-less round.

His eagle on the par-5 fifth hole highlighted his surge.

“It’s nice to put myself back in the tournament and I don’t know what’s going to happen,” he said. “I’ve done my bit and I probably got to go a low one (in the final round).”

n PLAYING WITH A PURPOSE: John Mallinger, who has never won the PGA Tour but has a Nationwide Tour victory to his credit this year, said his father has been the hospital during the past week.

“He’s getting better so I’m kind of playing for him,” said Mallinger, a 31-year-old Californian who’s tied for third place at 12-under entering the final round.

-- DRAWING ATTENTION: A few more people learned who Bud Cauley is Saturday compared to his appearance at a youth clinic earlier in the week at Alamance Country Club in Burlington .

Cauley, who turned pro a couple of months ago after three college seasons for Alabama, was paired with popular John Daly for the third round of the tournament.

And Cauley outplayed him, shooting 2-under. Daley checked in at even-par.

-- YOU AGAIN: The third-round pairing of Jim Renner and Jason Bramlett might have looked familiar. They were part of Burlington native Jerry Richardson Jr.’s threesome during the first two rounds.

They won’t be together again today. Renner shot 5-over, falling to last place at 1-over for the tournament. Bramlett stayed at 4-under by shooting even-par after going 2-under for the round through five holes.

-- SELL OUT: All tickets were sold for Saturday’s third round, tournament officials said. Because of the late-afternoon delay associated with a storm, CBS coverage ended with the leaders a few holes away from finishing.
