National League Game Capsules

Sparked by Josh Harrison's go-ahead RBI, the Pittsburgh Pirates pushed across seven runs in the seventh inning to earn an emphatic, 9-2, victory over the Milwaukee Brewers in the back end of a doubleheader. The Brewers won the opener, 8-1, behind a strong performance from Chris Narveson, who returned from the disabled list to toss 5 1/3 scoreless frames and knock in a pair of runs. In the nightcap, Ryan Doumit went 2-for-4 with a home run and two RBI for the Pirates, who had lost 13 straight games to the Brewers. Brad Lincoln allowed two runs over six frames before handing the ball to Daniel McCutchen (4-3), who worked a scoreless seventh to earn the win. Zack Greinke (12-5) was charged with seven runs on seven hits over 6 1/3 innings to suffer the loss. He had won his previous five starts. Corey Hart had a solo home run for the Brewers, who have won 23 of 27 despite the setback. They remain a comfortable nine games ahead of the Cardinals for first place in the NL Central.

Philadelphia, PA (Sports Network) - The Phillies scored 10 runs for Cliff Lee. He only needed one. Lee continued another one of his dominant streaks, striking out seven batters in seven shutout innings, and Hunter Pence hit a two-run homer and scored four times Monday in a 10-0 win over the Mets. Lee (14-7) extended his personal winning streak to five starts and has given up just six runs in 38 2/3 innings during the span. He allowed just three hits and three walks to the Mets on Monday. The left-hander also set a career- high with 191 strikeouts this season, beating his previous mark of 185 set last year with No. 186 in the third inning. John Mayberry also hit a two-run homer for the Phillies, while Placido Polanco went 2-for-4 with a walk and a run scored in his return from the disabled list from a sports hernia. The Phillies placed Jimmy Rollins on the 15-day disabled list with a mild Grade 2 right groin strain he suffered Sunday. Mets rookie Dillon Gee (11-5) was lit up for eight runs on seven hits in just 3 2/3 innings and suffered only his second loss in the last seven starts. Center fielder Angel Pagan, who was Lee's 186th strikeout in the third, left the game with a stomach virus. Lucas Duda and Ruben Tejada had two hits apiece for the Mets, who have lost four straight and are just 2-10 in their last 12 games.

Chicago, IL (Sports Network) - Jair Jurrjens pitched into the seventh inning and the Braves got home runs from Freddie Freeman and Dan Uggla in a 3-0 win over the Chicago Cubs. Jurrjens (13-5), who snapped a five-game winless stretch and won for the first time since July 6, gave up eight hits and walked five. The right-hander escaped several jams, including twice with the bases full and lasted 6 1/3 frames. The Cubs, who took two of three from St. Louis at Wrigley Field over the weekend, couldn't get the clutch hit in the opener of this four-game series and left 15 men on base. Ryan Dempster (10-9) had eight strikeouts over six innings, but had a three- decision winning streak broken. He fell to 2-12 lifetime against the Braves.

Washington, DC (Sports Network) - Jayson Werth belted a three-run homer to back 6 2/3 strong innings from Ross Detwiler, as the Washington Nationals downed the Arizona Diamondbacks, 4-1, in the opener of a four-game series. Detwiler (2-3) allowed one run on six hits to earn the win. He walked one and struck out three. Werth had a pair of hits and scored twice while Jonny Gomes knocked in a run for the Nationals, who have won five of seven. Drew Storen worked a 1-2-3 ninth to record his 34th save of the season. Joe Saunders (8-11) surrendered four runs on six hits and three walks over six innings to suffer the loss. Henry Blanco hit a home run for the Diamondbacks, who saw their losing streak reach a season-high six games. The Diamondbacks now lead idle San Francisco by a single game atop the NL West.

St. Louis, MO (Sports Network) - Aaron Miles hit an RBI triple and scored in the ninth inning, as the Dodgers overcame a strong start by Chris Carpenter to squeeze out a 2-1 win over the Cardinals in the opener of a three-game series Monday. Carpenter hit the leadoff man, Juan Rivera, with his 99th pitch in the top of the ninth and was pulled for newly-acquired veteran Arthur Rhodes despite giving up just five hits and a walk until that point. Rhodes struck out his only batter, Andre Ethier, but Miles tripled to the right- center field wall off Fernando Salas (5-5) to tie the game at 1-1. Miles then scored when Rod Barajas, facing Jason Motte, grounded sharply to shortstop Rafael Furcal with the infield drawn in. Furcal knocked the ball down, but his throw home was neither accurate nor on time. Lance Berkman hit a leadoff homer in the second inning against 21-year-old Dodgers starter Nate Eovaldi, his 29th of the season, for the Cardinals' only run. Berkman's blast to right-center was almost enough for Carpenter and the Cardinals, who opened a seven-game homestand after returning from a 2-4 road trip.

Denver, CO (Sports Network) - Jhoulys Chacin pitched seven innings and his two-run double capped a six-run opening frame against Brett Myers, on the way to a 9-5 Colorado triumph over the Houston Astros in the opener of a three- game series. Carlos Gonzalez continued his hot hitting with a homer and three RBI for the Rockies, who have put together three straight wins for the first time since July 27-30. Chacin (10-10) gave up 11 hits, but just one run to win for only the second time in his last 12 starts. Gonzalez extended his hitting streak to 10 games. He has an RBI in seven consecutive contests, tying a career-high. Over those seven contests, Gonzalez has driven in 14 runs. The Rockies entered the ninth with a 9-1 lead, but Matt Downs belted a pinch-hit, three-run homer off J.C. Romero. Colorado was forced to use three pitchers in the ninth with Rafael Betancourt notching his third save. Brian Bogusevic homered among his three hits for Houston, which has lost two straight following a four-game winning streak. Myers (3-13) was charged with nine hits and seven runs over five innings and lost his seventh straight decision. The right-hander, who hasn't won since June 17 against the Dodgers, a span of 12 starts, entered the night 7-0 in his career vs. the Rockies.
