BOSTON (AP) - Reliever Boone Logan struck out Adrian Gonzalez with the bases loaded to end the fifth inning, and the New York Yankees came back to beat the Boston Red Sox 3-2 last night to win their eighth straight game and take over the lead in the AL East.
Logan (3-2) was the first of five Yankees relievers who combined to throw 4 1-3 shutout innings after starter Bartolo Colon couldn't make it out of the fifth. Mariano Rivera was the last, pitching the ninth for his 29th save.
The win gave New York the division lead for the first time since July 6. Boston had beaten the Yankees in eight of their previous nine meetings this year.
Nick Swisher had two hits, including an RBI double off Jon Lester (11-5) to give the Yankees a 3-2 lead.
Lester, who had won five consecutive starts against the Yankees, allowed three runs on five hits and four walks, striking out seven in six-plus innings. David Ortiz homered and Josh Reddick had a pair of hits for Boston, which had been a season-high three games in front of New York on July 24.
They still led by 2½ on the morning of July 30 before the Yankees swept the Orioles in a doubleheader to start their winning streak. But the teams came into the three-game series at Fenway Park tied for the best record in the AL, both 68-42.
The game brought out the stars, with Seinfeld co-creator Larry David and Spike Lee rooting for the Yankees and Aerosmith frontman Steven Tyler and Peter Farrelly, of the filmmaking brothers, pulling for the home team. It was a pleasant 71 degrees for the first pitch, and the crowd of 38,006 was the 688th consecutive sellout at Fenway Park.
WHITE SOX 5, TWINS 3: Carlos Quentin hit two home runs and had four RBIs, Mark Buehrle was sharp after a rough first inning, and Chicago snapped a six-game losing streak.
Buehrle (9-5) allowed three unearned runs and four hits over eight innings, extending his streak of allowing three runs or fewer to 17 straight games.
All three runs against Buehrle came in the first inning and were unearned because of an error by first baseman Adam Dunn.
RAYS 8, A'S 4: Jeff Niemann took a four-hitter into the ninth inning en route to winning his fifth consecutive decision for Tampa Bay.
Niemann (6-4) allowed four runs and seven hits over 8 2-3 innings. The right-hander was replaced by Kyle Farnsworth after giving up a pair of runs and three hits in the ninth. Niemann improved to 5-0 in eight starts since returning from a strained lower back on June 20.
Evan Longoria and Casey Kotchman both had run-scoring doubles, and Matt Joyce hit an RBI single in the fifth that put the Rays up 4-0.
Coco Crisp and Hideki Matsui homered for the Athletics, who have lost 30 of their last 37 games away from home. Guillermo Moscoso (4-6) gave up four runs and six hits in 4 2-3 innings.
TIGERS 4, ROYALS 3: Brennan Boesch hit a go-ahead RBI single in the 10th inning to lift Detroit.
Wilson Betemit led off the inning with a walk and pinch-runner Andy Dirks took second on a wild pitch by Aaron Crow (3-3) with one out.
Daniel Schlereth (1-1) worked two scoreless innings and Jose Valverde pitched the bottom of the 10th for his 31st straight save.
Austin Jackson and Boesch opened the game with back-to-back triples in the Tigers' two-run first inning. Alex Avila tacked on a solo homer in the fifth.
BRAVES 4, METS 1: Dan Uggla extended his career-best hitting streak to 26 games with a two-run single in the eighth inning while Tim Hudson pitched seven stellar innings to lift Atlanta.
Rookie Freddie Freeman doubled twice to run his hitting streak to 19 games, a personal best. Hudson (11-7) allowed three hits in helping the Braves hand the Mets their fifth straight loss.
Jose Constanza had an RBI triple and Michael Bourn a sacrifice fly for Atlanta off R.A. Dickey (5-10). Constanza made two acrobatic catches on drives by Jose Reyes in left field and Jason Heyward made a diving grab on Daniel Murphy's drive in right.
Cubs 4, Reds 3: Tony Campana drove in two runs with an inside-the-park homer and Chicago won its sixth straight.
It was the first major league homer for Campana, who also singled and doubled. He became the first Cub to hit an inside-the-park shot at Wrigley Field for his first homer.
Ryan Dempster (9-8) matched his season-high with six walks, but held the Reds to two runs and four hits in six innings. Carlos Marmol got three outs for his 24th save.
Cardinals 3, Marlins 2: Lance Berkman's second double of the game brought home Albert Pujols with the go-ahead run in the eighth inning to lead St. Louis.
Pujols doubled off Florida starter Anibal Sanchez (6-5) to lead off the inning, and Berkman drove Sanchez's final pitch of the game into center field to put St. Louis on top.
Matt Holliday hit his 18th home run for St. Louis. Mitchell Boggs (1-3) threw a scoreless seventh for the win, and Lance Lynn struck out Mike Stanton with the bases loaded to end the game and seal his first major-league save.
Padres 15, Pirates 5: Chase Headley's grand slam highlighted San Diego's first four-homer game of the season, and the Padres handed the Pirates their eighth straight loss.
Headley's shot to right-center capped a six-run fourth inning and was the Padres' first grand slam of the season. Kyle Blanks, Aaron Cunningham and Jesus Guzman also homered for the Padres.
