CORAL GABLES — The University of Miami conducted its first scrimmage of fall practice Sunday afternoon at Greentree Practice Field.

The scrimmage was closed to reporters, but coach Al Golden said afterward that the play of his quarterbacks was "excellent."

Senior Jacory Harris and sophomore Stephen Morris are battling for the starting job. A decision will be made following UM's second scrimmage, scheduled for Aug. 22.

"I'd be interested to see where our (completion) percentage will be for the day, but I thought we did a good job," Golden said. "We found our check-downs a couple of times and, to me, that's very important."

Golden said there was just one turnover – a Jimmy Gaines interception – during the scrimmage, but did not say who threw the pass.

The Hurricanes were scheduled to attend a barbecue at Golden's house on Sunday afternoon. UM will be off Monday before resuming practice on Tuesday morning.
