Hamels heads to DL, Orr recalled - phillyBurbs.com : Sports

The Phillies placed left-handed pitcher Cole Hamels on the 15-day disabled list on Tuesday afternoon — retroactive to Aug.  13 — due to left rotator cuff inflammation and recalled infielder Pete Orr to fill the roster vacancy.

The move could be a simple one of procedure. Hamels was originally scheduled to start Friday night's game against the Marlins.  However, in the release announcing the disabled list move, the club announced that Hamels is scheduled to start on Monday in Cincinnati.

That would mean that the Phils can keep Roy Oswalt, Roy Halladay and Cliff Lee on turn through the weekend instead of trying to push one back to squeeze Hamels into a position. By placing Hamels on the DL, it also allows the club to bring Orr in as an extra bat on a bench that is currently down a man with Raul Ibanez's sore groin forcing him to the bench.

Hamels threw a light bullpen session in Washington on Saturday and reported feeling no discomfort or ill effects. He was scheduled to throw another one today in preparation of a Friday start. There was no word on whether that has been pushed back. In his last start on Aug. 12 against the Nationals, Hamels suffered diminished velocity on his fastball and complained of shoulder stiffness, forcing an MRI that revealed no structural damage.
