CORAL GABLES – The Hurricanes held their first scrimmage of fall early Sunday afternoon and are now headed to Coach Al Golden’s house for a barbecue and pool party before their first day off in camp on Monday.
The scrimmage was closed to the public and media, but Golden talked afterward about it in a video interview released by UM, which also provided some stats/highlights.
Here the stats/highlights as recorded by UM:
— The QBs combined to complete 38-of-52 passes for 407 yards with 6 TD and 1 INT, with Jacory Harris and Stephen Morris combining for 5 TD and 1 INT. It was not revealed which of the two threw the INT.
— WR Tommy Streeter had five catches — all in the red zone — for 71 yards and 3 TD. Two of the TD passes were from Harris.
— Morris and WR Travis Benjamin connected for a 47-yard touchdown pass down the right sideline. The throw came with DT Marcus Forston in Morris’ face.
— K Jake Wieclaw made 2-of-3 FGs. He was good from 45 and 54 yards and narrowly missed wide left from 56 yards.
— LB Jimmy Gaines had an INT and a sack to go along with five tackles. FS Vaughn Telemaque had the other sack.
— CB JoJo Nicolas led the defense with eight tackles. LBs Gionni Paul and Ramon Buchanan had six tackles each.
— The defense had eight tackles for loss — minus-29 total.
— RBs Lamar Miller and Mike James and TE Asante Cleveland each scored a TD in goal-line situations. On the opening drive of the scrimmage, Miller had gains of 16 and 31 yards.
— RB Eduardo Clements had a 21-yard run. FB Maurice Hagens had a 20-yard carry.
Here are Golden’s thoughts on the scrimmage:
— Golden said of the execution and energy: “It’s getting there. We’re not where we need to be yet, but this is like a preseason game.”
He estimated the first-team was out there for 55 snaps, the second-team for 45 to 50 and the third-team for about 15, “so we got a good look at everybody.”
— Golden described the quarterbacks’ play as “excellent.”
“I’d be interested to see where our [completion] percentage will be for the day, but I thought we did a good job,” he said. “We found our check-downs a couple of times and to me that’s very important. Lamar [Miller] made a big play, we hit the tight ends [with passes] underneath with Clive [Walford] , Cory White …and we got a couple explosive [plays] down the field as well.”
— There was just one turnover in the scrimmage – an interception by Gaines. Golden didn’t say which QB threw it.
“Even the one [turnover] we had was unfortunate, because it didn’t need to end like that,” Golden said.
— Golden also said he was pleased withthe running of Miller and James. As a whole, however, he was “disappointed” the offense “didn’t execute as well as we need to in the short-yardage situations, both the ones we set for them and the ones that occurred naturally in the flow of the scrimmage.”
— Based on Golden’s account, one of Streeter’s TD catches was the highlight of the scrimmage.
“It was a tough one. He went up where he was above the goal post there and snatched it. It didn’t look like he had a chance, to be quite honest with you, but he really got up high,” Golden said. “The biggest thing with Tommy right now is he’s more mentally tough and he’s in really good shape. He’s learning how to play at a higher level and he’s catching tougher ones every day.”
— As mentioned above, Gaines had an INT.
“Jimmy’s doing a good job for us,” Golden said. “It’s going to be quite a competition inside there at linebacker . Gionni and [Jordan] Futch will have something to say about it. We’ll see how it shakes out.”
— Tackling wasn’t as good as it should have been during the second half of the scrimmage, Golden said.
“That might be a function of fatigue, but that’s inexcusable,” he noted. “We’ve got to be better. I thought we were really good early on, to be honest with you. I thought we wrapped up well and pursued with force. And then we tailed off a little bit.”
