negotiations with the Astros , nor Matt Barnes ' talks with the Red Sox. Both former UConn players seem destined to go to the Aug. 15 wire. Springer's camp met with the independent Long Island Ducks in late July to set up a possible option. After an initial offer from Houston, a counter-proposal and revised offer, the negotiations have been quiet.

Only nine of the top 33 draft picks have signed, so it's not unusual, just the result of a flawed system that assigns arbitrary values to draft slots, creates skewed leverage and this long delay for kids who want to get started.

Greg Nappo, UConn's No. 2 starter this past season, remains in the rotation at Class A Greensboro (3-0, 3.68 ERA). His opponent Sunday will be none other than Stephen Strasburg, making a rehab start for Hagerstown. … Doug Elliot, UConn's former catcher, has decided to call it a career after playing a handful of games for Helena of the Pioneer League this summer. … After flirting with a no-hitter in his first start, Farmington's Shawn Haviland (5-9, 7.36) has struggled at Double A Midland, but he has won three of his last four starts. … Tigers Hall-of-Famer Al Kaline will be in Norwich on Monday night to throw out the first pitch to his grandson, Colin, who plays for the Connecticut Tigers. He will be available for autographs during the evening. … RHAM-Hebron's A.J. Pollock has continued his strong season at Double A Mobile. Through 107 games, he was hitting .310 with 28 steals in 33 attempts and 84 runs scored. … Mike Olt (UConn, Branford), who has been out since June with a fractured collarbone, is expected to resume playing for Myrtle Beach this week.
