Bathurst moves into University Shield semi - Local News - Sport - Rugby League - Western Advocate

DESPITE a 6-0 scoreline in the first three minutes of the quarter final of the University Shield, Bathurst High have stormed into the semi finals winning 38-6.

The Entrance Campus came out firing and crossed Bathurst High’s line in the opening minutes, but that was to be their only points.

Bathurst High then kicked it into gear and crossed for eight tries.

Coach Des Crawford said the early try was a ‘wake up’ call for the boys.

“The game was tight in the first 10 minutes,” he said.

“It was a real arm wrestle but then we started to get possession and had good field position and were able to pile on the points.

“For me this was the best game I have seen them play, the boys were making metres, had good field position and were really hungry for the win.”

Leading 22-6 at half time, the Bathurst side was confident they would progress into the top four in the state, but to make it certain put three more converted tries on the board.

Captain Doug Hewitt scored the first try and ended the day with three to his name.

Brothers James and Matthew Woolmington, Ricci Arriola, Blake Seagar and Andrew Mendes all bagged one and Mendes converted the tries.

Seagar and Luke Carpenter where in doubt for the clash as they were recovering from broken hands, but both played.

“Luke and Blake had ten minute stints,” Crawford said.

“Both went on for match fitness and to have them come off the bench was very handy.

“Whenever Blake found the ball he was a handful, he had a lot of control, made inroads in the defence and set up a couple of tries.”

Bathurst High are now in the same spot as they were last year, in fourth position, but this year the high school wants to do better.

“Last year we had to travel for the game, this year we believe it is going to be at Carrington Park,” Crawford said.

“That is going to be a major advantage for us, not travelling and having a home crowd.”

Jake Betts was named player of the game and Crawford said the honour was well deserved.

Both sides had representative players and for a year 10 student to be named player of the game indicated how well he played.

BATHURST HIGH 38 (Doug Hewitt 3, James Woolmington, Matthew Woolmington, Ricci Arriola, Blake Seagar, Andrew Mendes tries. Andrew Mendes conversions) defeated THE ENTRANCE CAMPUS 6.
