Sound Off: Friends of Ms. Hughes

The following is what Kane County Chronicle readers sounded off about in the past week:

I think the name the Friends of the Sugar Grove Library is a misnomer. It should have been called the Friends of Beverly Holmes-Hughes. Exactly who do they hurt by disbanding? They didn't hurt the library board. They hurt the library, the library patrons and the citizens of Sugar Grove. I think they should regroup together, come together and continue to help the library. And it's evident that there is a problem, since Ms. Hughes won't make any statement based on, and I quote, advice of counsel. If she is innocent of all wrongdoings, I don't know why she doesn't speak out.

What is this guy doing?

Yes, I agree with another fine mess about the Standard & Poor who has downgraded our credit rating. What is this country coming to, really? People, you listen to the elected officials about they're going to do this or that for you. Time and time again, you find out that they do not. They just talk big, and they say what you want to hear. But it's not like that. And, it's about time that they changed the government, stop having people who are rich. Obama? Oh my gosh, how much does he travel? When Republicans were in office, it was, oh, these guys travel so much. What is this guy doing? Why do we have to wait four years to get healthcare insurance. Does our sickness go on hold?

It appears that our local government has the same problem as the federal government – the blame game. I've been calling the City of Geneva and the Forest Preserve District all summer to ask why the parkway grass across from the Campana Building on Route 31 hasn't been cut for two years. Each office tells me it's the other's responsibility. Come on, people. Stop acting like kindergartners. Someone, please cut the grass.

I'm calling about Gladys the Goose in Geneva. Was that something you just had to take? Or was it so cute that you couldn't resist taking it from these people who enjoyed it so much? Or is it something that you're going to just sell to get a fix? If you're not going to return it as they asked, just at least come to the door and get its clothing. Don't let it go naked. God bless you.

Obama is busy on his Midwest listening tour, on his $1 million bus. He says he plans to develop a plan by September to improve the job situation in America. My question is: What has he been doing the last several years besides the talk-show circuit and campaigning? Those are the two things he does best.

It seems as though you just print things that are sent in by Republicans. I'm neither one, but I do think you should print this. If they don't like it when people smoke and they ban it from everything, then why don't they ban the tobacco companies from making cigarettes. And if alcohol is making so much problems, why do they allow people to produce alcohol? And why do we have all kinds of things going on that are not good for us, but we don't tell people not to sell them to us. That would help a lot, don't you think? Let's get rid of liquor. Let's get rid of people who produce cigarettes and all those things things that bad for people, instead of going through all these other things we have to go through. We also shouldn't allow people to produce guns and casinos. People are spending money at casinos when they don't even have money to spend for things like that. And we've got to get rid of guns more than we do the cigarettes.

Free country?

It's Thursday morning, and this might be my only opportunity to play Walter Jacobson. I will start by saying don't make the government mad. Don't do anything against the government, or they'll get you. That's what Walter would say. This morning I saw on TV that the Justice Department is investigating Standard & Poor's. I can't believe that the U.S. attorney will investigate a civil enterprise. I don't even know what to call it – Communism, Fascism. I thought we lived in a free country. If they attorney general had any guts, he'd tell the administration he's not going to do it.
