Full Count

The Red Sox continue to monitor the market for left-handed reliever Brian Fuentes. (AP)

Of course Brian Fuentes would make a nice addition to the Red Sox bullpen. If the free agent were to sign with Boston, he would give the Sox something they do not currently have: An experienced left-handed reliever with a long history of dominating lefties (while also remaining reasonably effective against righties).

Over the Monster

No surprise here, really. With a lefty Ellsbury leading off, Pedroia is one of the best right-handed on-base guys on the team, and actually seems to perform slightly better against righties despite being one himself. His contact ability (4% swinging strikes last year was a career high) and patience should build up pitch counts early, and if nothing else, he'll likely move Ellsbury along should he get on ahead of him.

Red Sox Eager to See Carl Crawford Take Over Fenway Park's Legendary Left Field

Editor's note: Each day this week, Tony Lee will examine one part of Carl Crawford's journey to major league stardom. On Thursday, his patience and dedication to the Rays during their down years was covered.

When Carl Crawford uttered those words earlier this month while being introduced to Boston media and responding to a question regarding his new set of teammates, he was not dissing Tampa Bay, the organization which gave him his start and allowed him to rise to stardom. But it was impossible for him to glance at the roster in Boston, one which now included the speed demon, and have any other kind of reaction.

Red Sox: Something from nothing - BostonHerald.com

Here’s the best thing we can say about the 2010 Red Sox [team stats] season: It laid the groundwork for what’s shaping up to be one heck of a 2011.

General manager Theo Epstein has long had this offseason circled as one that could remake the franchise. With Padres slugger Adrian Gonzalez expected to be available via trade and speedster Carl Crawford hitting free agency, Epstein’s dream Plan A was to land both.

1. THE RED SOX ARE BACK IN BUSINESS:

With their offseason acquisitions of first baseman Adrian Gonzalez and Carl Crawford, plus a rebuilt bullpen, the Sox are already being billed as the top team in the American League heading into 2011. It doesn’t hurt any that free agent lefty Cliff Lee spurned theto sign with the Philadelphia Phillies.

Winter Classic, Randy Moss, Adrian Gonzalez Highlight Exciting Year of Ups and Downs in Boston Sports

What a year it was in Boston sports.

We began 2010 with an outdoor hockey game at Fenway Park. The Winter Classic was classic indeed, a mild winter’s day that saw the Bruins win in overtime. It was a day that reminded us that Boston truly is a great hockey town, ice and grit permanently mixed into its DNA.

Patriotic panelists fearlessly face quiz

TRENTON -- Some of the games were "fixed" and George Washington wore a hair extension, but a belief that "the show must go on" infused the Patriot Quiz Games at the New Jersey State Museum Auditorium yesterday as participants took turns testing their knowledge of American history.

Part of a six-day Patriots' Week celebrating Trenton's role in the American Revolution, the games went on as scheduled despite remnants of the weekend snowstorm that resulted in cancellation or rescheduling of a series of activities designed by the Trenton Downtown Association to promote tourism.

That Bale and Lennon Look, Season 1 Part 1

Continuing on from my surprisingly well received previous festive match incident catalogues (thanks a lot for that, by the way!), this match day saw the arrival of the Toon Army to the old gal that is White Hart Lane. A summation of yesterday's match is hardly necessary; the words 'Anthony Taylor, you unrestrained imbecile!' spring to mind. But, in keeping with my Christmas pledge, blah blah, you get the drift.;) Newcastle, fresh from Mike Ashley's latest attempt at ensuring that the phrase 'Cockney Mafia' lives on long after the Guy Ritchie movies have been forgotten, arrived in North London in a blaze of anticipation, despite having seen their 2-1 win over Liverpool negated by a 3-1 defeat to City. Now managed by Alan Pardew, whose sole claim to fame is attempting a fist-fight with Arsene Wenger during his spell at West Ham a while back, the proud Geordies arrived full of hope that the morale-boosting win over mighty Liverpool would prove they could beat a lesser team like us. No one had the heart to inform them that, while they had been away, some distinctly unappealing things had happened to that team. Nevertheless, 90 minutes, two goals and only the second clean sheet of the season later, here's what I noticed from the game at hand.

Mavericks' life without Dirk Nowitzki

DALLAS -- As if they didn't already know it, the Dallas Mavericks discovered how life is without Dirk Nowitzki. And it isn't very good. The Toronto Raptors ran the court hard and hit the boards even harder en route to stunning the Nowitzki-less Mavericks 84-76 Tuesday night at American Airlines Center. The 76 points were the fewest the Mavs have scored all season as they suffered a serous power outage. The loss snapped the Mavs' five-game winning streak and dropped them 2 1/2 games behind San Antonio in the Southwest Division. The Spurs, who play in Dallas on Thursday, hammered the two-time defending world champion Los Angles Lakers 97-82 on Tuesday.Dallas (24-6) entered Tuesday's game following an impressive 103-93 win at Oklahoma City on Monday. However, Nowitzki sprained his right knee in that game and wasn't available to play against the Raptors.Nowitzki's absence was like the Supremes trying to sing without Diana Ross."When you're missing your best player, it's always difficult," Mavs guard JJ Barea said. "We're going to have to do a better job in the next game."Barea acknowledged that the Raptors (11-20) were the better team on this night. Toronto won the scoring battle in the paint 48-24, and it had a 25-9 advantage in fast-break points."They outplayed us at both ends," Barea said. "They played great defense on us and we couldn't execute."The Mavs only shot .413 percent from the field and got outrebounded 42-35.Toronto led 23-13 after the first quarter, 46-40 at the half and 64-59 entering the final period."I think Toronto played a great game and we were subpar," Mavs coach Rick Carlisle said. "We got off to a sluggish start, particularly defensively."I think we were in too much of a 'try and make things happen' mode and not enough trusting the team and the system and really working together."The Mavs are 5-1 in the second game of back-to-backers. This also was the third ugly home loss of the season for the Mavs, who also were defeated by lowly Memphis (91-90) and Milwaukee (103-99) at American Airlines Center earlier in the season.Meanwhile, forward Caron Butler had his right shooting hand heavily taped after the game. Butler said he injured the fourth and fifth fingers on his right hand, but added: "I'll be fine."

The Salvation Army's Top Bell Ringer

It seemed an impossible goal: one volunteer, with one kettle, raising $15,000 for the Salvation Army in St. Charles, this holiday season. The bells and kettles had been collected and retired for the season at the Salvation Army Corps Office there Tuesday night. The guy they call 'Kettle Man Sam' had done it: but not by bell alone.

Haley Barbour friend: Yazoo City was that bad - Haley Barbour - Salon.com

What happened between Brown v. Board of Education and that January day in 1970 comprises some of the most monstrous inhumanity in the cruel annals of American history. Recently, in a cover feature in the conservative Weekly Standard on his presidential ambitions, Mississippi governor and fellow Yazoo native Haley Barbour had occasion to reflect on that place, in those years. The best that can be said about his recollection is that it is not 100 percent a lie -- just deeply confused, mostly wrong, and indicative above all of a cynical man who has made a lucrative career of exploiting racial trauma when it suited him, or throwing it down a memory hole when it did not; which is to say, an archetypal Dixie conservative.

From the Creaux's Nest - TheRecordLive.Com

TWENTY-TEN ENDS TWENTY-ELEVEN BEGINS

The year 2010 has not been an easy year for America. The country was on the brink of a deep depression, the auto industry, GM & Chrysler, faced going under, which would have had a domino effect with citizens throughout the country waiting in bread lines. Large banks and mortgage companies had over extended in the last decade and were in deep trouble. When the year started, the country had lost eight million jobs, unemployment reached nearly 10 percent. Today, as we face 2011, the country is not healed yet but the recovery is moving forward. The government saved the auto industry and mortgage companies. Many workers are still unemployed but unemployment benefits have been extended. Jobs are returning and being added daily. However, making up the eight million lost jobs while trying to create work for those who are constantly coming into the job-hunting age has been the most difficult. I’ll always remember 2010 as the year we came close to facing our second Great Depression. The coming year, 2011, will continue a slow recovery. I predict that unemployment will drop to eight percent by the years end. Not good enough but digging out of a big, dark hole. I believe the country will better understand in a year the benefits of the new health care plan. It has been difficult to understand because it becomes law in phases. It probably didn’t go far enough to stop rising cost. A government health plan option is probably the only way but insurance companies have too much clot. It will never happen. More people will appreciate the insurance plan and it’s benefits in years ahead. It’s never been fully explained in a way laymen can understand it. All in all, 2011 will be a better year for the country. In the past year government divide has been nasty and polarizing. It will continue but I’m confident that despite the roadblocks, America will prevail and march on to better days. I have to move on. Come along, I promise it won’t do you no harm.

Capsule for the Armed Forces Bowl: SMU vs. Army

This is just Army's fifth bowl ever, and it's only the 13th for SMU. It's the Mustangs' second bowl in a row, but last season's postseason appearance was the school's first since 1984.

Year in Review: Sports

Born into a family of Sudanese cattle farmers, Manute Bol didn't start playing basketball until he was sixteen years old. A U.S. college coach spotted him and convinced him to come to America, and the rest is history. At 7'7'', Bol became the tallest man to ever play in the NBA and attendance soared when he played on the road. He endeared himself to fans (whom he called his "friends") and was often juxtaposed in posters next to fellow Washington Bullet Muggsy Bogues, the NBA's shortest player at 5'3". More than a curiosity, during his ten year career Bol was one of the best shot blockers in the league and even developed into a decent 3-point shooter. He remains the only player in the NBA to have more blocked shots than points scored. "I had a good time with the American people," Bol told Sports Illustrated after retiring from basketball. "I hope they remember me as a good guy who played hard. I wasn't Michael Jordan, but I was somebody called Manute Bol." Bol died on June 19, 2010.

R.I.P Teena Marie- R&B Queen Passes On

Published on December 27, 2010 by Eric   ·   No Comments

Damn it all. Why are all my favorite entertainers dying?! I get it, my taste is from decades past and people get old – but Teena Marie? This one I’m mad at because the woman was only 54-years-old. It turns out that the amazing songstress had encountered some health scares in the months leading up to her tragic death. Teena had suffered from a series of seizures, including a grand mal seizure as recently as a month ago that resulted in a couple of broken ribs after collapsing. An ambulance was called at the time, and the singer ended up having another one on the way to the hospital. After that, friends say that she was so shook up about her recent onslaught of health scares that she would even have someone sleep next to her for fear of the episodes reoccurring. What a shitty way to have to live your life. Apparently Teena did have someone sleeping next to her the night before she passed, but it wasn’t until a nap the next afternoon that her daughter found her unconscious. Holy crap! Her daughter? Poor girl. Obviously the cause of death is unknown still since there were no illegal drugs found at the scene – the only drug found was diazepam, which was prescribed to Marie for her seizing – and of course this crap always seems to take longer when there’s a celebrity involved, but she is suspected to have died of natural causes. This could very well be the case since the R&B singer reportedly stopped taking her diazepam and replaced it with herbal remedies. Jeez, what a waste of an amazing talent. That woman could sing her white ass off. She said it herself:

The National Anthem Saga – In defence of the President

A National Anthem should be sung in its original version in the original language it was composed. All citizens should learn the meaning whatever race they belong. The national Anthem should be sung in Sri Lanka only in Sinhala. One national anthem, one nation.

Article 7 of the Constitution of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka states  “ The National Anthem of the Republic of Sri Lanka shall be "Sri Lanka Matha," the words and music of which are set out in the Third Schedule”.

Monahan on

TVGuide has reported that Monahan will be voicing “a lion choo-choo conductor with mad storytelling skills in Sprout’s new animated series Drive Dan’s Story Train .” According to the singer, the show approached him about it because “they wanted someone that had something to do with trains.” In case you don’t know how the show works, Pat Monahan has set up the formula to each episode: “There’s a problem at the beginning of the show, and then we read a story related to the problem. There’s always a happy ending, which is perfect.” It sounds like a cute show for kids, and since Monahan loves children, he had fun doing the show.

CBS Remains Top Network, 'Dancing' Top Show

However, 'NCIS' is not too far behind from taking overall season crown by MICHAEL HINMAN , Posted Dec-26-2010 Add a comment

There's no surprise on what is sitting at the top of the ratings.

Blame it on Bristol Palin. Or just television audience's desire to see D-list celebrities dance. But ABC won the fall with "Dancing With the Stars," thanks to a 15 percent jump in ratings, sending it right past "NCIS," which wasn't too far behind for CBS.

It’s free.

Why is the world’s largest Internet search engine giving away free laptop computers? To “beta” test its new computer operating system. For those who don’t understand, operating systems are the heartbeat that make the hardware do what it does. Right now, there are three primary operating systems: Windows, MacOS, and Linux. When you start your computer, it’s the first screen that greets you.

2011 Predictions: Richard MacManus

1: Flipboard becomes the breakout news reading app of 2011. With its latest round of updates in December, Flipboard introduced Google Reader and made some significant changes to sharing and navigation. I expect Flipboard to introduce more such upgrades in 2011 and begin to expand to other devices than the iPad. These moves will push Flipboard into becoming a very popular app to browse, curate and share news each day. It won't usurp Google Reader for curating and sharing activities, simply because Google Reader can be used on the PC. However for mobile surfing, which will be an increasingly important way to browse news in 2011, Flipboard will rule in curating and sharing of media.

More on Elizabeth Edwards

By Letters to the Editor

Laura Vecsey’s commentary “A painful public legacy” is commendable, though I fear some will see it as a topic to be avoided.

To my mind, Elizabeth Edwards was culpable in seeking to give the American people, myself included, a president whom she knew to be a liar and a philanderer.

Morris Jeppson was a weapons test officer aboard the Enola Gay and helped arm the atomic bomb that was dropped over Hiroshima. Tsutomu Yamaguchi was the only person recognized as a survivor of that bombing and the bombing of Nagasaki that came three days after.

Georgia Tech (6-6) is the nation's top rushing team, averaging 327 yards per game, while Air Force (8-4) is right behind at more than 317 yards per game. There are some subtle differences to each team's scheme -- both coaches agree that Air Force likes to take a zone-read approach -- but there's no doubt that there will be very few surprises.

ItÂ’s lights out for JFK Middle School students | News | Metrowny.com

Postponed because of the first snowstorm of the winter, students at JFK Middle School got to experience what itÂ’s like in school after hours at the character education lock-in event.

Kristine Schuh, co-advisor of the character council, the event organizers, along with Jeff Clarke, made it clear that the lock-in - for which kids pay $20 to have fun into the wee hours of the night and sleep over in the schoolÂ’s gym - was equivalent to the hottest contest coming to HSBC Arena. Students stand in line a half hour prior to ticket sales a month before the event to attend the lock-in. A line usually forms, twisting and turning throughout the halls of JFK Middle School.

Inverted curriculum makes physics first science in high school

CHATTANOOGA — Some educators are starting to turn the way they teach high school science upside down.

Families adjust when college students move home for the holidays

BY DARLA SLIPKE Oklahoman    Leave a comment

Courtney Fraser likes staying up until 2 a.m. and sleeping in, but her mom isn’t wild about it.

Fraser, an Oklahoma State University freshman, recently returned home to Omaha, Neb., for her first extended break since starting college in the fall. She is facing the same challenges as many other college students — a clash between growing independence and life back at home. Although half of Fraser’s family is OK with her sleep schedule — her dad is also a night owl — Fraser’s mom still tries to rouse her in the mornings.“It’s kind of weird after living on my own,” said Fraser, whose newfound freedom is being checked for the first time in four months. Many students who return home look forward to quality family time and perks like free laundry or home-cooked meals. But conflicts can arise between students, parents or siblings over issues like curfew and independence.Dr. Stewart Beasley, a counseling psychologist in Edmond, said parents and students need to be flexible and make adjustments.Beasley is also a clinical professor of psychiatry and behavioral sciences at the University of Oklahoma’s College of Medicine.Parents must realize that their children are often returning home with a greater sense of independence, and students need to be aware that the lifestyle they were accustomed to at school might be disruptive to their family, Beasley said.Beasley encouraged parents and students to discuss ground rules and schedule family time.Oklahoma State University freshman Ryan Robinson is splitting his time this winter break between his father’s house in Scottsdale, Ariz., and his mother’s in Vancouver, British Columbia.Robinson said relaxing at home has been a nice break from the stress of school. He was excited to see his family members and girlfriend, who lives in Arizona, but sad to leave his friends from school.“I’ve kind of gotten used to this being my home,” Robinson said of Stillwater.Oklahoma State University senior Natalie Coleman moved back home for breaks during the first three years of college. At first, it was great to enjoy home-cooked meals and relax without schoolwork looming over her, Coleman said. But it became harder for her to make the transition between being on her own and being back home as she got older. At home she was often alone while her parents worked. That was a stark contrast to life in her sorority house where she was often surrounded by dozens of other students.Coleman said she got cabin fever at home.Fortunately, her parents were supportive and helped make the transition as easy as possible. Coleman said she also learned to be flexible.“I wish there was an easier way to handle it, but it is all a part of growing up,” Coleman said. This holiday season, Coleman will be spending time at home in Oklahoma City and with her fiance’s family in Dallas.Fraser said she was ready to be on her own when she started college this fall, but being back home has many advantages. She has enjoyed seeing her family and friends. Her parents are also happy to have her home. Fraser said home-cooked pork chops and chicken Parmesan are a welcome break from the food she eats at school.

College dropouts strain families, economy

Dropping out of college has a cost — mostly to the students whose careers might be in jeopardy but also to taxpayers who help fund college education.

Eight four-year colleges in the Rochester region are estimated to have $93 million in public dollars invested in almost 5,000 students who did not return to their college after their first year, according to a new study that looked at the five-year period ending with the 2007-08 school year.

Football's loneliest job: Place-kicker | The Journal Gazette | Fort Wayne, IN

In the modern game, coaches’ expectations are soaring, inflated by three decades of kickers’ increasing proficiency. “There are only 32 regular positions for 32 teams for guys to kick field goals, but everybody knows there are a lot more kickers than that who can kick well,” says Tim Hasselbeck, a former NFL quarterback who is now a football analyst for ESPN. “If you’re a kicker, you’re all alone. … It still comes down to those one or two kicks in a game. And if one guy fails, there’s always somebody else to take over.”

The Desk's look back at how consumers fared in 2010

By Laura Gunderson, The Oregonian

They charged extra fees, refused to deliver and failed to pay wages.

Sometimes, the companies featured in The Desk this year cleaned up and apologized. Sometimes they vanished.

In general, 2010 has been a good year for consumers. Federal legislation has changed how banks charge fees and how wireless providers bill cell-phone users. And the states have prevailed in a number of cases, including last week's settlement with DirecTV that will provide restitution for certain customers who felt the satellite company wasn't clear in its marketing pitches and contracts.

Many businesses dread the snow, because it keeps customers at home, but there is at least one business that thrives on it.

"It`s key to get it early, it drives businesses for the whole season," said Brandon Solem a salesman at Paradise Day Spa.

President Obama's 2011 To-Do List: Economy...Again

With President Obama's legislative victories behind him including health care, repeal of "don't ask don't tell," an arms treaty, tax rate deal, he's vowed to have a laser-like focus on the economy in the coming year...again.

At a press conference Wednesday before heading to Hawaii for a Christmas vacation he said, "And my singular focus over the next two years is not rescuing the economy from potential disaster, but rather jumpstarting the economy so that we actually start making a dent in the unemployment rate and we are equipping ourselves so that we can compete in the 21st century."

The GOP's census dilemma: Embrace immigration or gerrymander

Some Republicans are crowing over the 2010 Census, but any red-state gains they make will depend on two big ifs: whether the party undergoes a virtual religious conversion and supports immigrants, or it gerrymanders like mad.

Most news reports this week on the new population figures understated the size of the immigrant impact. If you add their American-born children, immigrants accounted for fully three-fourths of the nation's population growth over the past decade, and not the slightly less than half that was widely reported, based on counting the foreign-born only in the Census Bureau's parallel 2009 American Community Survey .

Right Turn

I'm getting whiplash trying to follow the Democrats' talking points. First, it was a disaster when President Obama agreed to extend the Bush tax cuts. Obama was a wimp. Then it was a horrid error to allow the omnibus spending bill to die (and with it all that funding for Obamacare). The White House, liberals complained, also blew it on the Dream Act. Yet now, presto: Obama has mounted a phenomenal comeback!

Phoenix, AZ - Hispanic Republicans are dismayed that the United States Senate has not shown compassion upon our Hispanic youth, as it voted down the DREAM Act.  The disappointment we feel is indescribable.  It cannot be said too strongly that Speaker Nancy Pelosi and President Obama bear the most blame for this tragic event, as they delayed getting this vital legislation to the floor.

Cannibalism: more captivating than we like to think | Anouchka Grose | Comment is free | guardian.co.uk

Stephen Griffiths, the self-styled 'crossbow cannibal' who was sentenced to life for the murder of three women. Photograph: AFP/Getty Images

At the trial of Stephen Griffiths – the self-named "crossbow cannibal" – the judge is reported to have said: "It is one thing to terrorise and kill, but to dismember and eat parts of the victims takes it to another level of the exertion of power and sexual gratification." As if killing another human being isn't extreme enough, eating them afterwards apparently compounds the seriousness of the crime; it's unforgivable. But given that the real tragedy – the loss of life – has already occurred, what is it that makes cannibalism so disturbing and unacceptable for us?

Checking the Orioles' tab

While wondering whether Brett Favre texted pictures of his feet to Rex Ryan ...

I saw the mlbtraderumors.com post ranking each club according to its offseason spending and braced for the inevitable Orioles bashing. I knew it was coming, so I may as well address it.

(It also allows me to mention Adam LaRoche again, keeping my streak intact.)

Back to drawing board for Fastbats and Flyers

Flyers, are both finding that elusive first victory hard to come by this season.

Their second meeting of the campaign finished the same way as the first encounter, with honours even.

The two teams looked set for a long evening when three of the first four matches went to a decider, with Fastbats taking a 3-1 lead thanks to a win each from Keith Smith, Helen Shields and Greg Hill.

Sound-off responses - AFC West Blog - ESPN

It's apparent many Kansas City fans have changed their opinion of quarterback Matt Cassel.

I asked fans if they now believe in Cassel and they overwhelmingly answered “yes.” Cassel was maligned after a so-so first year in Kansas City last season and a slow start in 2010. However, Cassel has been terrific for the past two-plus months. Sunday, he reached hero status when he led the first-place Chiefs to a critical win at St. Louis 11 days after he had an appendectomy. The Chiefs lost, 31-0, at San Diego without Cassel the week before.

A winter-storm warning remains in effect for most of western Colorado until 5 p.m. Thursday, with wind gusts of more than 30 mph near the Continental Divide, forecasters warned Tuesday night.

Dirty Dozen: (Almost) Time to Hand Out 2010 Awards

After reading the emotional reactions to Tom Coughlin four days after the Giants' meltdown against Philadelphia, I guess I won't vote for him for coach of the year, although ...

Almost every season, he belongs somewhere in the top five-to-10. As does Andy Reid, who is getting roasted for not challenging the "not down by contact'' call that led to the TD that gave the Giants a 31-10 fourth-quarter lead over Reid's Eagles. Imagine if the Eagles had lost ...

Baseball talks about parity, but winter moves make MLB more inequal than ever - ESPN

While most years it represents little more than five days of standing by potted plants waiting for the underwhelming to finally occur, periodically, the baseball winter meetings actually reflect the mood of the game. The 2000 meetings in Dallas represented such a moment, when the combination of American economic muscle fueled by booms in technology stocks and the housing market and a game reinvigorated by new stadiums, steroids and home runs, translated into a baseball spending frenzy.

Can the Oakland Athletics Make a Run for the A.L. West Title in 2011?

This year’s baseball offseason has been a tumultuous trip so far with Jayson Werth signing a 7-year/$126 million contract with the Washington Nationals that shocked numerous baseball executives, the Boston Red Sox doing their best to cement themselves as a World Series favorite next year by adding Carl Crawford, Adrian Gonzalez, and Bobby Jenks among others, and the Philadelphia Phillies swooping in at the 11 th hour to land the prized Cliff Lee. With all the noise that these offseason additions have made, some teams have been making some quiet moves to make a run in 2011. One of those teams is the Oakland Athletics.

Did Arte Moreno Just Throw In The 2011 Towel?

Arte Moreno has changed his tune about spending and winning. Has he given up on 2011 as financial realities appear?

Follow@sbnationla on Twitter, and LikeSB Nation Los Angeles on Facebook.

Dec 22, 2010 - Countering numerous news reports and a never-ending stream of internet rumors,Angelsowner Arte Moreno told the LA Times that the Angels never made an offer on Carl Crawford . Moreno expressed shock at the $126 million deal thatJayson Werthgot from theWashington Nationalsand broke down many reasons why the Angels would not go seven years on Crawford, pointing out that the asset of speed leaves a player before the power does. Moreno was crystal clear in his logic of not wanting to raise ticket prices in order to subsidize these somewhat risky deals. But why the bluster in October when, after the first sub .500 season of his tenure, he told the very same rag that he would spend whatever it takes to get to the playoffs.

Crawford treats Ray employees to lunch - MLB - SI.com

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) - Carl Crawford has left Tampa Bay for Boston, but he hasn't forgotten a group of people who helped make his nine seasons with the Rays a success.

The four-time All-Star who agreed to a $142 million, seven-year deal with the Red Sox this month picked up the tab Wednesday for lunch at Tropicana Field, where about 150 Rays employees feasted on a barbecue meal the Gold Glove left fielder arranged to have delivered to the home of the AL East champions.

United Methodist Church Responds To Tea Party Nation's Judson Phillips

at the United Methodist Church Sunday when he saw a sign in front of its Washington, D.C., building that read "Pass the DREAM Act." Phillips simply could not reconcile the measure — which would provide a path to citizenship for undocumented immigrants who were brought to the United States as children if they have clean records and a college degree or two years in the military — with traditional Christian values. Compassion was not Jesus' thing, right?

Our Opinion: Food Safety Measure Is Overdue Step Forward

Lost in the din of legislative weekend activity concerning “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” and the DREAM Act, Congress actually took a rare ambitious step toward addressing a growing problem in our country.

The Food Safety and Modernization Act, which was raised from the dead after a procedural error seemed to doom its passage and should improve the level of safety in America’s food supply, passed the Senate Sunday. The House OK’d it Tuesday.

Pedro Ramirez named Top College Role Model

By Collegian Staff | December 21, 2010 | Briefs , News

Pedro Ramirez, president of the Associated Students, Inc., at California State University, Fresno, was named one of the “ Top College Role Models of 2010 ” by the Huffington Post, an online news and blog site, for his role in lobbying for the DREAM Act after he admitted to being an undocumented resident.

News That Matters: The DREAM Act is Voted Down

• National union leaders meet with Obama, concerned about his back-pedaling on tax cuts for the wealthy. That bill, meanwhile, is signed, and should be sealed and delivered by New Year’s.

• Procedural votes kill the immigrant-aiding DREAM Act in the Senate, but a big-deal food safety bill, which was nearly undone by improper protocol after it passed weeks ago, passed again.

Response to Dream Act letter

Byron Whitesides wrote a derogatory letter that disgusted me. He claims that it would be a threat to the country if the Dream Act was passed. That's not true. It would only be a threat to you, Byron, if you didn't do what you had to when you were in school to ensure that your job was secure. We are always going to be competing for jobs in this world. Will you blame the illegal immigrants on the poor status of the economy?

Manchin: Absences won’t happen again

Senator was hosting holiday celebration December 22, 2010 - By Jenni Vincent, Journal staff writer

MARTINSBURG - U.S. Sen. Joe Manchin told state reporters Tuesday he takes responsibility for a decision to attend a family function last Saturday, which meant he missed two key Senate votes - including the immigration DREAM Act and an opportunity to repeal the military's "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" law.

Daily Kos: State of the Nation

If you think there’s too much politics, too much petty bickering, and too much putting party over country in our nation’s capital, well, you’re right. We’ve still got some work to do to make Washington look a little more like Montana.

But from cracking down on Wall Street and insurance company greed to cutting taxes and creating jobs for Montana families to repealing the “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy, we’ve gotten a lot done.

Dems helped undercut Dream Act

As I understand the way the newspaper business works, your paper comes up with the headline for those stories you choose to publish. Page A3 on Sunday had the headline, "Republicans block Dream Act." Reading the story, the reader discovers the bill failed by five votes. The majority of the half-page article wailed about how unfair it is to the young people it was intended to help and included quotes from several students and others who were in favor of the bill. Not until the last paragraph or two were we told that three Republicans switched over and voted for the bill while five Democrats voted against the bill. Since the bill failed by five votes, how can you say the Republicans blocked the bill? Seems to me that the Democrats killed the bill and deserve whatever blame your editorial stance wants to assign. - Ronald Maty , Chandler

Oregon Latinos React To Failure Of DREAM Act

BEND, OR -- The DREAM Act, which would have allowed young people brought into the U.S. by undocumented immigrant parents, failed in the Senate over the weekend. The proposals, backed by both Ron Wyden and Jeff Merkley, received 55 votes, but needed 60 to pass. The Act would have allowed young people to gain citizenship by meeting several requirements, including attending college or enlisting in the military. Francisco Lopez with CAUSA (said his immigrants rights coalition will ask the state legislature to at least allow in-state tuition for students of immigrant parents.

In calling Ralph Friedgen’s ouster a “business decision”, first-year Maryland athletic director Kevin Anderson made it clear that a coach’s win-loss record is no longer among the chief criteria for continued employment. Anderson needs a coach capable of bringing more fans to Byrd Stadium and selling those painfully empty luxury suites in Tyser Tower.

-Florida rivalry isn't strange.

"You're in this business long enough, you're around guys – you become friends with them," Fisher said. "He's going to try to beat me. I'm going to try to beat him. But it has nothing to do with respecting him and what he does and how he does things."

The night the Florida news broke, Fisher said he called Muschamp. It was "a good conversation," Fisher said, in which Fisher offered his congratulations and Muschamp offered his appreciation.

Florida coordinator considered for Temple football job

University of Florida offensive coordinator Steve Addazio was in town Monday to talk to Temple about replacing Al Golden as football coach, according to sources with knowledge of the situation.

Golden, who guided Temple to an 8-4 finish this season, accepted the job at Miami last week.

Addazio, 51, worked at Florida under Urban Meyer, who will coach his last game for the Gators in the Jan. 1 Outback Bowl against Joe Paterno and Penn State. A spokesman for the Florida athletic department said Addazio was expected to work the bowl game.

Ranking the SEC coaching jobs in 2010

Now that all of the SEC and national coach of the year awards have been doled out, here’s the “official” ranking of the jobs done by the SEC's 12 head coaches this season:

1. Gene Chizik, Auburn: The Tigers are 13-0 and playing for a national championship. What else can you ask for? Plus, Chizik was a rock in managing all the Cam Newton distractions the last month of the season and was able to get his team to focus on the prize that much more during all the controversy.

Letters from the issue of December 23, 2010

Many factors: I don't doubt the prospect of rebuilding the University of Florida's football team played a role in Meyer's decision ("Urban Meyer Leaves UF to Protect His Legacy," Luther Campbell, December 16), and many of Uncle Luke's comments contain a grain of truth. But taken as a whole, it's difficult to believe only that one factor led to his decision. After all, he had already built the team in his image once and was very successful in doing so. (Remember that last national championship?)

UF Gators running back Jeff Demps will miss Urban Meyer, but positive on replacement football coach Will Muschamp | Gatorsports.com

Unfortunately, the injury bug turned those dreams into dust. Demps suffered a foot injury in the third game of the season against Tennessee and was never 100 percent the rest of the year. He did play in 10 games and rushed for a team-high 531 yards, but that total, as well as his three touchdowns, were the lowest single-season marks of his three-year career.

Addazio reportedly lands a new job… at Texas | CollegeFootballTalk

Well, so much for the Temple speculation.

Steve Addazio, rumored to have interviewed for the Owls vacancy Monday, has instead apparently decided to head in a westerly direction and remain an assistant on someone else’s coaching staff.

The Florida offensive coordinator, according to multiple reports/rumors, appears to either be on the verge of being hired or has been hired as Texas’ new offensive line coach.  In addition to his coordinator duties with the Gators, he was also Urban Meyer‘s line coach for the past five seasons.

Former UF Gators coach Urban Meyer won't help coach 2011 football team, job is for Muschamp alone | Gainesville.com

10. There is a misconception, at least I think it's a misconception, that Urban Meyer is going to play a major role in coaching the 2011 football team. Two things everyone has to realize — 1. Meyer is stepping away because of health issues, which means stepping as far away as possible; 2. If Meyer wanders out to practice and talks to Chris Dunkley about the best way to run a route, it's an NCAA rules violation. You are only allowed to have nine coaches. That's how Southern Cal got into trouble. Well, that and paying Reggie Bush's parents. Meyer will always be a part of the Gator Nation and has been embraced by Will Muschamp. But Florida knows it can get tricky if the former coach is hanging around. UF has the best athletic director in the country and the best compliance guy in the country. They will figure it out.
