High School Girls' Basketball: North Allegheny tops Bethel Park

In a season where the talent pool in WPIAL Class AAAA is deep, North Allegheny might have swum to the early lead Wednesday.

Kelly Brennan scored 21 points and No. 2 North Allegheny used a strong start and finish to defeat No. 4 Bethel Park, 56-50, in the championship of the North Allegheny tournament.

The lone remaining unbeaten team in Class AAAA, the Tigers (8-0) took a 24-14 lead on Bethel Park (7-1) in the second quarter. Then, after holding a 48-47 lead with just less than two minutes remaining in the game, the Tigers used an 8-3 run -- with all points coming on free throws -- to earn the victory.

Alexis Aiken added 10 points for the Tigers and Paige Hufnagel chipped in nine.

Candace Martino led the Black Hawks with 18 points but was held scoreless in the fourth quarter.

• Jaclyn Watkins scored 18 points and Class A No. 3 Aliquippa (8-0) raced to a 10-point first-quarter lead en route to a 57-45 triumph against Quaker Valley (5-3) in the championship of the C.J. Betters tournament. DeAnn Ryan led the Quakers with 13 points.

• Gabby Baldasare's 16 points helped Class A No. 1 Vincentian (9-0) edge Beaver Falls, 38-23, in the semifinals of the Penn State-Beaver tournament. The Tigers (4-3), who saw their four-game winning streak halted, were outscored, 19-9, in the second half.

• Taylor Lubinsky scored 15 points, as Hempfield (6-2) rolled past West Mifflin (6-3), 56-37, in the Hempfield tournament.

• Girls with four or more 3-pointers: Kate O'Neil, Beaver, 4; Marita Mathe, Indiana, 4; Lauren Krachala, Penn Hills, 4; Alexis Coleman, Woodland Hills, 4.
