Having sold 1.6 million related items, the iPhone 4 dominated the ranks of eBay as the site’s number one “Top Shopped” item of 2010. Second place on the list went to the iconic Barbie doll, selling 1.17 million related items. Military jackets rounded off the top three most sold items with 1.03 million related items sold.
Closing off the top 5 were Hot Wheels (748 thousand related items sold) and Apple’s iPad (600 thousand related items sold). Meanwhile, soccer fans came out of the woodwork by purchasing over 265 thousand World-Cup related items, ranking in at number six.
“Year after year, we see the hot trends, topics and pop culture obsessions translate into online sales,” said Karen Bard Sayah , eBay’s trend expert.
eBay even had a break down of 2010′s most popular fashion trends, which included plaid, 1950s styles, neon, Marc Jacobs, feathers, faux fur, Tory Burch, ankle boots, leopard print, and of course the military jackets.
Ironically, the iPhone 4 and iPad were the only two electronic devices to make the top 10 list this year (no electronics made it in 2009′s top ten) which was mainly occupied with pop culture items, toys, and fashion items.
eBay is not the only place one would see top rankings of these and other Apple creations. Time magazine dubbed the iPad as 2010′s gadget of the year while the MacBook Air, iPhone 4 and Apple TV ranked in the top ten gadgets. Also, iPad, Apple’s iOS and iPhone were the most discussed technological topics on Twitter. Wall Street Journal’s Technology expert Walt Mossberg rated the iPad as the most reviewed gadget of 2010, with iPhone 4 following closely behind.
The “Top Shopped” list is compiled from U.S. eBay listings that include key search terms (ex. used iPhone 4 for sale) in the title. Research was collected between Janurary 1, 2010 and December 19, 2010.
